This morning, Joe and Jill Biden went out for a walk with their dogs, Champ and Major, to check out the surprise the first lady had installed overnight for Valentine's Day weekend. The White House lawn has been decorated with oversized hearts that have positive words like LOVE, GRATITUDE, COMPASSION, and FAMILY on them. The one that says HEALING is signed "Love, Jill."
As they walked along with coffee cups in hand, the first couple was met by a few members of the press. The conversation that they had has gone viralnot so much because of how extraordinary it was, but rather the opposite. It was delightfully ordinary, filled with normalcy, decency, and even a random act of kindness for good measure. And the simple goodness of it all is moving people to tears.

I love these two and their dogs. It's so good to have kind loving people in the white house again.

Love Joe and Jill's two doggos!

(7,050 posts)and kindness. And their glowing love for each other. Reminiscent of the love between another favorite white house couple of mine, Barack and Michelle. Geeze their decency brings me to tears when I think about the last 4 years.

(12,950 posts)Trump and Melania always appeared to have a transactional marriage. He would pay her so money much now with the promise of more if he died before her. In return, she was a trophy wife and got to live the "good life," which means lots of glitter and showy perks -- like getting to ride in Trump's private jet.
When she became FLOTUS her actual nature appeared. It first showed in the scowl that replaced her smile the moment Trump had finished taking the oath of office (which he intended to treat like a contract he wasn't going to pay) the moment Trump's back was turned. Or when she flirted with Justin Trudeau in front of her husband, or batting Fat Donnie's hand away on several occasions. Or wearing the "I Really Don't Care Do U?" coat when she made a token appearance to see the children who had been separated from their parents, and not being moved to do anything to help them. And then there's my favorite Melania "trailer trash" moment -- building the "Marie Antoinette Memorial Tennis Pavilion" on the WH grounds while people were losing jobs because of the pandemic that her husband was treating as an inconvenient hoax.
I hope she got the cash up front. Actually, I could care less what happens to her.

(28,260 posts)Had a Democratic First Lady worn such a dastardly hateful sign on her coat, we can just imagine what the Press would've said.
It's just infuriating. The Press Is The Problem.
Thanks, Malaise!

(11,807 posts)...from even a Democratic President. They are beyond extraordinary. In fact, they are an oxymoron - extraordinarily ordinary. Or so they seem.
I totally believe that they are 100% genuine with their public personas, but their ability to "sit around the kitchen table and chat with their neighbours" is deeper and wider than I thought, for sure...and probably what most people thought. And can then shift into CIC or in whatever mode he needs to be, in seconds.
They are cut from the same cloth as The Carters. Decent. More than exceptionally decent.

(1,654 posts)Not meant to be funny. I could see a reason not to - severe allergy or something. But Trump in all his life apparently never had a pet. Never shared your life and your heart with another species. I'm pretty sure if you can't expand your heart and soul to encompass an animal where you develop a co-dependency, you can't handle the responsibility of leading a state or country or whatever. And I don't mean somebody who has a hunting dog or something just for hunting but ignores them most of the time or a person who has a pet but goes on vacation without even making arrangements for somebody to come and feed them and walk them and give them some companionship.

Thank you America for choosing this intelligent, knowledgeable and wonderfully warm hearted man to lead our nation.
The sense of peace I feel is immeasurable.

(56,800 posts)At the Democratic Convention in Denver in 2008, I as at a couple of meet and greet events with the Bidens. I didn't get to say much more than hello and joke that "we've gotta stop meeting like this, people are gonna talk (he laughed)" one time when we met up two nights in a row.
He's smart, certainly no fool, but doesn't exude the high intellectualism of Obama or Bill Clinton. He's well-read, just doesn't have the aura of it. Just real down-to-earth people. I'll bet he'll negotiate some crafty deals with some foreign adversaries and Republican leaders who won't even realize he's gotten the better of them until afterward.

(63,221 posts)miserable years of an angry, stupid, orally incontinent carnival barker joke excuse of a president. I can't even tell you how much relief I feel now that he and his rotten family are gone.
Joe and Jill and their sweet puppers are such a joy to see, although I feel a bit sorry for the older dog, as he seems to be struggling a little. I just hope that we see more and more of them and less of the Trumps as time goes on, no matter how much the Trumps try to gain media attention. A complete Trump blackout is what we need.
