(14,549 posts)I'm on a non-profit board which is insisting on organizing through FB.
I think the worst part of the design of FB is that it mixes your family life, personal life, high school days and work in one public place. In the words of George from Seinfeld "worlds are colliding !"

(86,005 posts). . . and self-expression isn't necessarily narcissistic. Posting on facebook is, in and of itself, sharing. The haters may be* self-obsessed.

(53,339 posts)I get email alerts on Occupy actions in my area, with links to FB pages for the events.
I also get alerts on new posts in groups I follow.
Not everyone uses FB as a nonstop personal public diary. FB is what you make of it, and for me it's useful.
Care Acutely
(1,370 posts)because I have more opportunity to share in their everyday lives. We are all far too busy for constant phone calls and nobody writes anymore.
Is it possible haters hate because they didn't get enough attention? My MIL hates FB because it reminds her that she cannot control everyone else's life/actions/beliefs.

(199 posts)But I would describe MySpace as that lot. Probably why so many left.
Like someone else said, I just like to keep touch with old friends and distant family.

(5,818 posts)There has never been a narcissistic letter mailed or phone call made. Bars and cafe's have never had a single self-obsessed patron. Every book written is an exploration of the moral condition of humanity.

I am just a Luddite, I guess.

(111 posts)For those of us without family and friends we wish to interact with on a regular basis, social media sites are just an enormous time-sink.
Give me the front porch, an interesting neighbor, and face-to-face time with glasses of lemonade, thanks.

(20,317 posts)I don't use it myself (I have a page but only see it maybe once a month), but I know plenty of people who enjoy sharing news, photos, etc. over their facebook page and I'd hardly call them narcissists.

(5,390 posts)I for one am glad that it exists. I had to move 3,000 miles away from my children and grandchildren six years ago. I enjoy the daily updates and pics. I can only afford to visit once every couple of years, so FB lessens the pain of missing my family. Yes there are narcissistic users on FB but that is true of any type of communications present and past. Our employer is transferring us again at the end of this month. Hubby had the same opinion as your OP. Today he had me set up his first FB account so he can keep in contact with all the wonderful people we have met here in Georgia.
Like everything else it has it good and bad, it's all on how you use it.
Shadowflash
(1,536 posts)I use it to network with other artists, reach out to clients, publishers, prospects and galleries and plug my new work for potential clients to see. FB has brought me a LOT of clients and revenue that I wouldn't otherwise have a clue existed let alone reached.
