First Read: Democrats didnt have 50 Senate votes to pass a $15 minimum wage increase, and the entire debate was complicating the rest of the Covid-19 relief package.
So if the goal was having the least amount of drama before passing the bill, then the Senate parliamentarian did Biden and the Dems a big favor (and its maybe the reason why Biden had already been signaling that the minimum wage hike wasnt going to survive).
Now theres a legitimate debate for Biden and the Dems on what they do next on the minimum wage. Do they try to pass a stand-alone hike to $15? Somewhere lower but tied to inflation? Or do they take tax deductions away from corporations that dont pay a $15 per-hour minimum wage, as Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called for after the parliamentarian ruling?

(2,808 posts)Sander's proposal sounds pretty good. But they eventually have to do the $15 in a standalone IMO.

(3,697 posts)The minimum in CA or NYC should not be the same as it in AL or MS. There must an inflation factor included no matter what they decide to do.

(805 posts)solution is adopted make those who make fortunes in this country but pay zero taxes pay taxes. No free lunch for anybody. Enough of the wealthy getting their way by financial threats. Pass laws and enforce them. Enough with the great financial inequality gap.
What were top tax rates under president Eisenhower when we built the greatest middle class in history? I read it was around 90 per cent for wealthy individuals and high for companies. Can anyone verify or flesh out?

(15,823 posts)Under 30K pays 1 percent
Under 50K pays 5 percent
Under 100K pays 15 percent
Under 500K pays 20 percent
Under 1 million pays 25 percent
Over 1 million pays 30 percent
No deductions period!!!!!
How does that sound? The only problem would be CEOs who dont take a salary and get paper shares. Maybe tax those by the amount of shares received?
