Is it a "I know this is the right thing to do, but because the liberals are in favor of it I have to be against it." thing?
Is it a "I know this is the right thing to do, but if I am staunchly opposed to it then millions will go along with it because 'Fuck the liberals', and then we can kill off a whole bunch of undesirable poor people" thing?

It's gotta be some mentality along the same lines as being opposed to LGBTQ. "I can't support gay marriage because they'll think I'm gay too" kind of thinking.
