Thinking about systemic rascism, I realize it has always been who we are. Slaves, Irish, Chinese,

Poles, Italians, French, Jews, Hispanics. Let me re-phrase in the words I heard growing up. Niggers, Micks/Drunks, Slanty eyes/ Gooks, Pollacks, Dagos/Wops, Frogs, Kikes, Spics. And there are many more. Insert religious terms. Perhaps the worst was what we did to indigenous peoples, both in terms of genocide, forced movement, land confiscation, "treaty" abuses and mocking with so many derogatory names. It all perpetuates today.

Drumpf has ripped off the mask of racism and the worst is yet to come. I am ashamed of our history and fear for our future. We are who we have always been, only now heavily armed and brainwashed into thinking that "whites" are the only victims, entitled to be superior, and can now express their victimhood violently. Take a look at where you came from, "whites." Don't think it goes that deep.

People know them. We've all heard them; this country is built on white supremacy. The issue with slurs is that they are used to hurt and oppress on an individual level and need to be called out, but if everyone in this country stopped using slurs, it would still be built on white supremacy. Think about your words, and then go deeper.

slavery are extremely rare. Western Europeans' serf ancestors were enslaved, though ownership normally passed with the land rather than on the block. Much the same in China, which is why western Europe and China never got into the horrible business of importing slaves from elsewhere; they weren't needed.

And let's not get into ownership of women. Or should we? Like other forms of slavery, this still exists in many places on this planet. But not here.

Joining all those who love to wallow in what's wrong with humanity, including the intolerance and even fear of differences wired into our being to various degrees by nature, is so tediously common and counterproductive. Some get a perverse pleasure from self flagellation and resentment of others, but it's a lousy wasted self indulgence when they could instead be marveling at -- for the critically important purpose of participating in -- the great advances that are the real hallmark of modern times.

In all of human history, slavery has never been so in abeyance as now. Actual chattel slavery is mostly eliminated, though still exists. Modern slavery mostly takes other forms, which do show up in the U.S., even though illegal.

And the current surge of overt racism and other group hostilities is a major backlash by those who keep losing to our continued advances in equality. We'll know we're past this when we belatedly realize that at some point we stopped talking about racism and racial strife all the time. When we don't believe we're supposed to be constantly offended by each other and aren't interested in those who keep trying.

As for slavery, the REAL thing, the Walk Free Foundation's Global Slavery Index, as of 2018, estimated over 46 million people are victims of modern slavery, including over 15 million in forced marriages and over 26 million in forced labor.
