So I have a moral dilemma. Advice welcomed .

Last edited Wed Mar 3, 2021, 12:05 AM - Edit history (1)

I had my physical today. I’m 54 and have lost almost 30 pounds in the last 14 months. Diet change and more exercise.

Anyway, the nurse asked me if I plan on getting the Covid vaccine. I told her I would drive to Jacksonville right now to get it(3 hours away). I was kidding but I would do it.

Apparently because I’m technically obese and have hypertension I qualify under our Governor’s new order allowing those under 65 with co-morbidities to get the vaccine. I have hypertension but medication keeps it below 130/80. So not horrible. And I’m 5’11” and 220 but very big boned. No one would call me fat, just real stocky and muscular. So my Doctor gave me a signed letter allowing me to be vaccinated.

The only reason I’m considering it is the wife. She is over 60, working everyday(I’m still furloughed) and I’m worried about her.

If it were just me I would put the letter aside. But now I’m torn with concerned for the wife. I would welcome input.

Not to be rude, but get it as soon as you are able/eligible. As a front-line HCW who has seen the ravages--even among those who swore to me that they were staying home and taking "every precaution," this is a no-brainer.

If your wife is not yet eligible, still get it. You are protecting her as well.

If you can't arrange a shot for your wife, your getting the shot will help minimize the chance you bring it home to her and also ensure you're there to help her out if she gets ill. Everyone who gets vaccinated, regardless of category, contributes to protecting all of us including those who cannot get the vaccine or are too stupid to take it when offered to their group because some propaganda says not to.

We're all going to be vaccinated in the next 12 weeks. You aren't taking a shot away from anyone else. Think of it as heading for the checkout line at a crowded supermarket. You get in the line you think is going to go fastest or that's the shortest. After standing there for a few seconds, another checker comes on duty and pulls your cart over to her register. Everyone waiting to check out is still going to check out, the store isn't going to close without processing everyone's purchases, and you just got gifted three minutes.

Neighbor...47...perfect health...took his mother to get her shot. She got her shot and the nurse asked him if he had his because she had a couple extra doses in the vial that were going to go to waste. So he took her up on it, got his card, and got scheduled for his 21-day second shot.

It's a crap shoot but it does happen. Results may vary by state depending on local rules but it happens in OH.

(There's also the camping out at the local pharmacy around closing time - several friends have "scavenged" their shots that way in OH and GA).

Good luck.

from a limited supply, thanks to President Biden. My wife called Walgreens on a friend's recommendation this evening and asked if they had any extra, and the pharmacist said if you get here in 15 minutes you are good. They just could not promise the 2nd shot. I got my first shot 2 weeks ago. We are both thankful. You will be doing yourself, your wife and your community a favor. Go for it.

My diet has totally changed. Not what I eat. But how much.

If you qualify medically, it doesn't matter that you don't look overweight or that your hypertension is controlled. If your BMI is 30 or more you are technically obese and you qualify. Get the vaccine for your own sake, your wife's, that of the medical people who would have to take care of you if you got sick, and the people you might spread it to. Do it!

To yourself, to your wife, to society.

If you get very sick, your hospital care is more expensive than the vaccine.
And if you get sick, you could infect others and possible kill them.

Sorry to be harsh, but there it is.

I had a similar but different moral dilemma a few weeks back. About a month ago I got a Slack message from a former college professor about the need for vaccine volunteering in my county. I jumped at the chance; filled out all the paperwork and then a few days later signed for a shift.

When I got to the volunteer location I was told that volunteers get to get vaccinated. I was both thrilled and felt terribly guilty that there were others who might be more in need.

But I wanted to be a regular volunteer, which does mean potential exposure. So there you go... one Moderna down and the 2nd one scheduled.
