This Senator Has Got the Math Wrong About a $15 Minimum Wag

Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, said Wednesday that he opposed raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, explaining that he earned just $6 an hour as a teenager working over summer vacations as a restaurant cook.

Mr. Thune has been rightly and roundly roasted for innumeracy. He was a teenager in the 1970s. Earning $6 an hour back then is equivalent to earning more than $20 an hour today, because inflation has reduced the purchasing power of each dollar.

On the merits, Mr. Thune ought to endorse a higher minimum wage.

And don't take into consideration the costs of living increases since the last minimum wage was passed. How many raises have Senators gotten since the minimum's last raise, try 4 raises for Senators. Those against giving it are working for big business, not the American people. Manchin's another one working for big business first, and screwing over those he's suppose to represent by saying he won't vote for it.
