(436 posts)And my wife and I will certainly vote for her. But it will be tough for her to win there. It definitely is red but it is getting better.

(17,912 posts)But....I know NC-11. I know it very well. She won public office, sure, but in Buncombe county, not Haywood or Henderson or Macon or Transylvania or McDowell counties. Huge difference. HUGE difference. They'll say she's "Asheville" because she checks every single box for being "Asheville". To many in NC-11, that's a pejorative. Most folks not familiar with the area might not get that. Asheville, sometimes referred to tongue in cheek as the "Paris of the South" or the "San Francisco of the South", is a stark anomaly. Culturally, it and its smaller sister, Boone, NC, have only geography in common with the rest of western NC. Beyond that, they're as different as San Francisco and East Kentucky.
Outside of the Asheville bubble, they're religious in the extreme and died in the wool conservo-nut. I'm talking ban book fundy. In the county I once lived, recently the locals were all in an uproar over a local playhouse doing Shakespeare for local high school kids. I mean in a fire and brimstone, ban it, burn books, frothing uproar. Freaking Shakespeare for god's sake. In the 21st century. THAT'S how politically and culturally fucked up most of NC-11 is. To be honest, I think most there deserve Meadows and now Cawthorn. They mirror the mindset and mentality of much of the NC-11 populace. All these years later, my heart still breaks for our fellows down there. Not just progressives, but middle of the road Dems.
Moe Davis was uber qualified, retired USAF colonel, a middle of the road Dem by anyone's standards and even he couldn't beat an uber UNQUALIFIED, barely literate, little Nazi. Jasmine has my undying support, but realistically, she doesn't stand a chance. I'd bet the farm NC-11 goes for Cawthorn in significant numbers in 2022.

(2,636 posts)Granted, I'm a life long Democrat from California, but there are plenty of folks here in Henderson who are democrats, and plenty of old school Republicans who find Cawthorn despicable here. As more people move here from elsewhere, I find more democrats in the mix.
Yes, she's "Asheville." I think Asheville's a good thing. Of course, diversity of thought doesn't frighten me. Cawthorn is angering many of his rightie constituents, too.

(17,912 posts)NC-11 will change over time. But it won't change organically. It's folks like you who are changing it for the better and that makes me very happy. Glad Cawthorn is getting some backlash, but I wonder if it's enough to get a sizable number of natives to fill in the oval for the Dem instead of the Rep. Some believe voting for a Democrat is synonymous with sin. They actually do. To them it means.."they're helping to kill babies!!11!1!!!1!!" I've heard it many times.

(2,636 posts)Based on what I see from these kids, now in their early 20s, Cawthorn will be voted out. I watch their discussions, and so many of them vote Democratic. Edwards is pissed off at Cawthorn. The Local Sheriff is as well.
For some of the older women I play golf with, I may be the only democrat they know, and i don't have horns or a tail.
One vote at a time.

(14,307 posts)She has the ability to go toe-to-toe with anyone quoting scripture. That should count for something.
We do need to turn that Democrats-are-the-devil thinking on its head, which will only happen with a strong standard-bearer, someone who can defend her principles. She seems like someone who can respond to attacks effectively. Debates would be fun.
If she can turn out a lot of disaffected Dems in Asheville, and Cawthorne's history of abuse and Nazi sympathies continues to get play and depress his support in rural counties, then maybe, maybe.

(17,912 posts)Plus the Dem spillover into Henderson and Madison counties and the fundies stay home, then maybe. The fact that she's a minister really doesn't register. The fundies won't listen, since they don't think she should even BE a minster due to her gender, much less her orientation. Hell, if Jesus himself ran as a Dem in that district, the right would swear he was the devil and vote Repuke.
