Interesting tidbit: Bernie Sanders carried every county in WV in the 2016 primaries.
This is just the beginning- as more folks get vaccinated, more will take to the streets; if the filibuster survives until the August recess, its going to be a long, hot summer for Manchin and Sinema.

(10,389 posts)And lost every one of them in 2020. Progressives don't have any clout in West Virginia. Progressive darling Paula Jean Swearengin only managed 27% against Shelley Moore Capito in the 2020 Senate election. Joe Manchin isn't worried by progressives at home at ell.

(46,154 posts)and was against a really poor candidate.
Rump's election was 2020. If Manchin had run then, odds are pretty high he would have lost. He is not up for re-election for almost four years, yet he is doing things that likely hurt us in 2022. All for a potential win in 2024 that is fairly unlikely, especially if Justice runs against him. Justice has now (in the words of an actual West Virginian poster here) outflanked Manchin somewhat on the left and completely on the right. Also, as I have repeatedly said, no one has adequately explain how Manchin screwing over his voting base on multiple issues aids him in any way in 2024.
He single-handedly just ripped close to 2000 usd from millions of peoples' UE cheques (Manchin's 23 weeks at 300 PW is 6900 usd, whilst the House bill, that all but Machin supported was 22 weeks at 400 usd per week, thus 8800 usd in toto), plus he worked with Shaheen and Sinema to take away any COVID aid cheques from 17 million people (12 million adults, 5 million children). Thus people got two cheques under the POS Rump, now they get nothing under us. Also, his minimum wage demands strip away over 8000 usd per year from a full-time minimum wage West Virginian worker (11 usd ph at full-time versus 15 usd ph at fulltime yields $8,320 per annum less)

(3,282 posts)Patrick Morrisey has won statewide election twice already, including beating Darrell McGraw, who had been Attorney General for 20 years before that. He's easily one of the top republican politician in the state. Bad candidate? That's absurd.
Trump spent a lot of time in WV in the runup to the 2018 election. He wouldn't have spent a second here in the 2020 runup. Republicans wanted WV more than anything else because it should have been an easy pickup. The reason they didn't pick it up is because Joe Manchin knows how to win elections in WV better than anybody in the world.

(42,862 posts)... particularly when the "revenge" or kneecapping some are seeking would actually do more to HARM so many progressive goals and objectives. Everyone knew in advance this would fail. It's no surprise. Why are so many acting so "surprised" and so angry? It's not as if someone snatched away victory at the last moment. Victory was never in the cards to begin with.
We BARELY have a 50/50 "majority" and it makes more sense to focus on the things we CAN accomplish rather than kneecapping the VERY SAME ONES that we'll need to maintain that (so called and tenuous) "majority".

(17,303 posts)With the new voter suppression laws just passed in GA, Warnock will likely lose re-election in 2022, and Dems picking up any new seats is unlikely as over 500 voter suppression laws in 43 states are in the works.
If HR1 fails to pass this year, the house majority disappears just through the gerrymandering of 6 districts. Republicans are working to rig the system for minority rule for a decade or more. If they take the house, they will impeach Biden and Harris; if they take the senate, they will install their candidate in the White House in 2024, regardless of the actual election results, by challenging and rejecting as many electoral votes as needed to make it so.
People who realize the survival of the Democratic Party, and the survival of American democracy depends on the elimination of the filibuster and passage of HR1, this year:
Adam Schiff
Jeff Merkley
Amy Klobuchar
Bernie Sanders
...and Barack Obama.
2022 will be too late- district lines will be redrawn and voter suppression laws will be in place.
As Schiff put it, this is a break glass emergency.

(58,785 posts)Some euphemistically call those trying to unseat Democrats in red states, while pretending not to know they'd be replaced with Republicans, "purists." I do not.
Remember 2016. The same subversive agents are "out there" busily preying on vulnerable minds. Again. Still.

Not one new progressive Senator was elected in 20...not one.

That is what FDR did. Use the Green New Deal to bring jobs and awareness to rural America.

(302,581 posts)And neither Manchin nor Sinema even runs for almost 4 years (Kelly has to run in 2022, so even more exposure). Meanwhile 2022 looms menacingly, especially given the disastrous outcomes of the last 2 first midterms for a Dem POTUS we suffered through.
