Trump is facing an array of possible criminal charges from simple fraud, to election tampering, to racketeering and insurrection, and at some point may be indicted, then arrested.
Personally, I believe this is unlikely, as the "system" is VERY reluctant to punish the powerful, but we live in strange times
I have a hard time believing that Trump is going to take an arrest quietly. The issuance of an indictment against Trump will galvanize him to use every lever at his disposal to discredit the process, and avoid the spectacle of actually taken into custody. Aside from the battalion of lawyers he will deploy, and the members of the GOP leadership and the Right-wing media who will immediately jump to his defense, Trump will stir up his flying monkeys who will do everything from physically intervene to prevent an arrest, to threaten, or even openly attack law enforcement, DAs, judges, and AGs, in order to prevent the incarceration of their God Emperor.
Seriously, if hundreds will attack the Capitol to prevent a vote on Trump's loss, what will they do to prevent him being subject to puny mortal authority?
The media in general will LOVE this, since it means ratings galore. The nastier Trump gets, the more violence provoked, the more the media will love it. Every fascist crazy in the country will ooze out of sewer in order to make a name for themselves. The GOP will line up behind Trump and support him regardless of the evidence. The Dems will be under constant attack, and always on the defensive, with no assist from the media (who have much to gain by stoking the fire).
It seems to me that whoever goes after Trump would much prefer his much abused sclerotic arteries save them the grief of never ending death threats and doxxing. Not that such a entirely predictable fate would solve anything. Trump's heart could explode after he ate three buckets of KFC, and a million conspiracy theories would bloom.

(16,785 posts)The evidence will be insurmountable against Trump. Go after his money sources first. Cripple his ability to transfer funds from one account to the other. Subpoena every financial transaction done prior to and since becoming POTUS.
Trump can run, but he cannot hide. If he is going down, he will take everyone down with him.

(4,465 posts)or him running. I am worried about what his followers will do. Consider how many Republican "leaders" and financial backers could be dragged into this, and the can of worms a deep dive into Trump finances over the last few years would open. Ties to Russia, and ties to the various billionaires who backed Trump's power plays, as well as all of the DC power brokers.
These people have the cash to fund a LOT of lunatics, lawyers, PR flaks.
That is a MOUNTAIN of raw political and financial power with a vested interest in hiding what has gone on over the last five years. Trump won't go quietly, and neither will these people allow him to be taken down.

(4,465 posts)I am concerned how we conduct elections when the minions of one party will be egged on by the leadership to attack rallies, polling places, election/party offices, officials and candidates.
We literally have the GOP actively working to undermine people's faith in the election process right now. What happens when they get violence into the mix?

(4,465 posts)Trump is indicted, and immediately armed protests break out in NY and FL. Everyone involved in the case is doxxed and threatened with imminent violence. Trump gets on Fox, OAN, or RT and starts calling for people to come protect him and attack the people "persecuting" him.
Again, lots of big money people (Kochs, Mercers, Murdoch, Adelsons, Theil, et al) who got INCREDIBLY wealthy thanks to Trump are going to act against attempts to prosecute him. Lots of GOP players who who hope to remain in power will do all they can to discredit the process. Some will advocate direct violence against the government since it doesn't seem they will be punished for their actions on 1/6.
Seems like this could go very badly, with a lot of death, destruction, and economic calamity.

(4,742 posts)Not the raving mob, he's their God-King and any indictment let alone arrest is going to send them absolutely ballistic...which, while it would be messy in the short term, would probably end up being a good thing in the long run, they'd finally have given an excuse to crush them with overwhelming force...but I digress.
The politicians wouldn't take it well, I'd expect the entire peanut gallery from Rafael and Josh The Nazi to Margarine Traitor-Greene and Bang-Bang Boebert to go absolutely apeshit; try all sorts of Congressional tricks, rile up their bases, throw tantrums on the House floor, maybe even have an internal riot and beat up Democrats themselves - I could see one of the fucking lunatic armed freshman drawing a gun on the floor.
The ultra-rich Republican donor class, though...they certainly inflated their wealth by unimaginable amounts under Trump, but he didn't make any of them unspeakably rich in the first place and not a one of them "owes" him a damn thing.
His energization of the GOP base suited their ends, but they aren't mindless cult followers like his popular base and Congressional bootlickers - and with Trump out of power, ginning up a national firefight is not in their best interests, Hell, the Kochs didn't contribute to his 2020 run, and I doubt ol' Sheldon is feeling particularly charitable after the abuse Trump heaped on him this summer. I'd be more inclined to think they'd quietly talk to some of the key GOP players and make it clear that Trump gets hung out to dry, or their money will be going elsewhere.
I'd be interested to see if the FBI might try to step in; US law is clear that interstate extradition requests must be granted, but DeSantis would probably rather screw a pig on live TV than hand Trump over...

(4,465 posts)the more he can get his aggrieved followers to revolt. The fact that Trump is wrong, or has no chance, is irrelevant. Protracted court battles have been his MO for five decades.

(4,465 posts)though to be honest, I would think Saudi Arabia is more to his taste. Russia is, to be honest, one of those "shit hole countries".

(100,075 posts)Neither does Saudi Arabia - both countries would be perfect for Trump to disappear to.
