It's a high-flying stock. What happens when everybody else makes an all-electric car?

(7,525 posts)Tesla's stock price will probably deflate when their growth slows down. That won't be good news for investors who bought stock at sky high prices, but Tesla will continue to profitably make electric cars, batteries, and solar panels.

(25,472 posts)Though, it can be difficult to determine what "value" in the market is anymore. The paper value of many companies is completely detached from any real-world reality.

(19,081 posts)The manufacturing is less labor intensive and less complex. And it's going to come down in price as the manufacturing and supply chain efficiencies will improve year after year.
In the end, I think a battery will be more reliable than an IC engine. And I think with less vibration and heat the rest of the car will end up more reliable too.
A couple things will be the key to how wide spread they get, battery charge time, and battery charger station convenience. That's going to take time, but they're already lowering battery charge time significantly. Perhaps in 10 years it's down to 10 minutes to get a full charge.
Battery life on a Tesla is already 300,000 to 500,000 miles, much longer than most internal combustion engines.

So in about ten years there will be much less need to mine current battery materials.

(10,905 posts)Right now, EV sales are about 5% of total. Tesla has a good chance at capturing the remaining 95%.
That said, Tesla is finally seeing real competition for that 95% after a decade of having the market to itself. Major companies like VW, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, and GM are all producing or set to produce competitive vehicles.
Tesla does have technology, brand loyalty and name recognition on their side, but they're behind in manufacturing, quality control, and service. The next few years will be crucial for the company. They'll need to step up their game.
As for the stock - it's been way too high for way too long. It will come down.

(4,559 posts)with the success of their self driving technology. IF, they can get to level five ahead of everyone else, the potential is huge and revolutionary for the transportation sector. It is however a very big if IMO - what they have done to date is pretty impressive but the ability to handle all road & traffic conditions, especially in inclement weather, is a much higher hurdle and may well prove to be infeasible or impractical, at least in the foreseeable future.

(4,559 posts)it's far from Level 5 autonomy. At level 5 the car drives itself under all conditions with no driver intervention ever needed. In fact, level 5 vehicles may not (likely will not?) have any driver controls such as a steering wheel and brake pedal.
The beauty is that level 5 lends itself to ride hailing services at much lower cost than a taxi or Uber etc. as no driver is required. One could even makes one's personal vehicle available for such service during idle times and profit therefrom.
And of course the commercial vehicle industry such as trucking, buses etc. would also benefit from being able to operate their vehicles almost 24/7 and with no drivers to pay. Not great for employment however...
In short, a workable Level 5 system would make Tesla, or any other, a fortune in revenue which has not gone unnoticed by investors.

(99,710 posts)It also has a Forward Collision warning. For a moderately priced car it has a lot of safety features.
