Last time, he also lost, but then one of the parties said that wanted to make a deal with his party.

(8,293 posts)It'll be nice to finally see him lose.

(25,331 posts)I'm surprised their last election was a year ago. I thought they were gonna have one sooner because things looked bleak for a coalition after that one.

(4,436 posts)When Israel goes to vote, when everyone is talking about democracy, remember that out of the more-than 13,556,000 people whose lives are directly affected by Israeli policy, only 8,642,000, or around 64 percent of them have the right to participate in that democracy.
In the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, where Israel exercises absolute and direct control on a daily basis, 650,000 Jewish settlers can vote while 2,953,000 Palestinians in the exact same territory cannot.
Put differently, of the 3,603,000 people living in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, only 18 percent, or fewer than one in five can vote in the elections that affect almost every aspect of their lives.
And of the 6,463,000 Palestinians living under varying degrees of Israeli rule in territory fully or partially controlled by Israel, only 1,548,000 24 percent, or fewer than one in four have the right to vote in Israeli elections.

(94,568 posts)While Netanyahu may not get a Knesset majority, I'd place the odds of cobbling together an anti-Netanyahu majority as extremely low, because of the number of Parties involved. Likely a caretaker Govt and a fifth election.

(19,477 posts)If there's a fifth election, presumably it will be even lower.
By the time the 20th election rolls around, say in 2022, only a few hundred people will bother to vote.

JERUSALEM Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus party won the most parliamentary seats in Israels election Tuesday, according to exit polls, putting him within sight of securing a governing coalition and extending his tenure as the countrys longest-serving leader.
Netanyahus Likud party far outpolled its main challengers but still fell well short of a parliamentary majority, and the exit poll results, which continued to shift in the wee hours of Wednesday, suggested that a majority might remain out of reach.

(8,293 posts)Last time blue and white won around 30 seats (like likud now) and the most seats, but did not have a governing coalition. Eventually they created one with likud until it fell apart. Now it appears there is not enough seats for likud to form a governing coalition even though they have the most seats.
ColinC
(8,293 posts)Theoretically the center left should be able to put together a 61 seat governing coalition. But there are so many parties, it will be tough.

(25,331 posts)But it's crazy how the exit polls seem to be more and more wrong as the votes are counted. The joint list wasn't supposed to have gotten even 6 seats according to exit polls. So far they have around 7 or 8. I'm becoming quite optimistic as the votes are counted.
