Is anyone else having issues with the IRS?

They don't like how we reported some income,,,, they say s/b 2018 we reported it in 2019,,,,, They say we owe them money,,,,
got our tax preparer involved he filed some things about it,,, now we get stuff saying we will go to tax court,,,, it's like they didn't even see that we protested the original premise,,,, our Tax Guy says they have acknowledged millions of pieces of unopened mail,,,,, and I see now using Bing/Google that even if you pay them, they don't even open the checks,,,, WTH??
Anyone else?? We are looking to pay them electronically now and refile 2019 and get a refund,,,, but it might take forever,,,,

It just doesn't seem right that they are issuing 'threats' but not opening mail.

on edit: it's Covid's fault.

"unpaid child support." Both of my kids were adults when we divorced and neither my ex nor I ever paid child support. Plus, we divorced years ago. Unbelievable.

I had HR do it that year. I sold out stock and I figured I did not give acct that info, and that is what I was being charged for. Here is the issue.

I got the letter end of Feb. I had to pay or they would charge me more. I thought about giving to acct, but I am poor and cannot afford someone to figure out and figured I owed. I paid. I got a letter sent 3/15, on 3/19 I received a letter stating I did not pay and I owed an addition 315.00 cause a blip, they had not included interest and it was due 4/15. I was concerned they were not getting and processing payment and I was going to be hit once a month. I got scared. I have never had to deal with IRS and I have heard impossible to talk to a person.

I called early Monday, but PT and was on hold 2 hours. I got a woman that was awesome smart. She told me to not automatically pay, that she thinks there is a mistake I can easily clear up, where to find it, how to correct it. My acct had not put cost basis on two of my investments I sold out and it increased my income, ergo tax rate. I mean, wtf. I really do not know whose mistake it was but I did included the needed documentation for tax guy, he did not turn a page to see the two accts.

I called again to give them the two numbers and the woman this time told me exactly how to bundle info to fax, where to fax, and what to put on cover page. My payment btw was processed 3/9 and I had sent it in 3/2.

The second IRS person told me to call every couple weeks. That they document the calls, and the person will -put notes in files which encourage others to get it done.

Don't know if helpful but never had an issue with IRS, then have this in 2018, and you do too. I can't wait to see the mess of 2019.

to catch up and get it all sorted out?? This is a huge mess for them and for taxpayers. Good to know that they document the calls. Thank you for that tidbit. Hope yours is all squared away.

3. In all fairness, Covid has done a number on all organizations, people going out sick,

businesses and governmental bodies short on bodies since so many out sick, etc., and this is literally a true fact, I see you made a comment that "it's Covid's fault"...ironically, it literally could be.

I got my stuff fine from the IRS. No hassle.

Hopefully your tax guy said to send correspondence etc. w/ the IRS under certified/return receipt requested options so you can track when they received the items mailed by you. When I had an issue (the IRS said that I didn't send something), I simply photo-copied my receipts that I got from the USPS and sent it back to the IRS. The IRS dropped the issue since they could see that in fact, I did mail the item(s) in question. Easy and simple.

6. Fairness?? I get that Covid has messed up everything.

I was not being sarcastic. It was a statement. But if they are not actually opening and reading the mail they receive then they should not try to do business. The correspondence we received yesterday was like they had nothing new and now they say 'tax court'. Our tax preparer is the one that said they just admitted in a hearing that they have millions of pieces of unopened mail. That what we received is computer generated, that he doubts that a human has even looked at anything. We did send a protest to their findings,,,, yes, certified & return receipt,,,, all that means is that it was received,,,, doesn't mean anyone opened it or read it or processed it in anyway. It's just frustrating.

13. Yes, it is frustrating in dealing w/ the IRS. My Mom (a CPA, and me, an accountant, auditing

was my emphasis) have dealt with the IRS quite a few times and sometimes we wondered about their competence on the IRS' side. I still wonder to this day. And I do get that the IRS is a bureaucratic institution but supposedly they do have some qualified people (I know some of them, friends of mine, who don't advertise to the world that they work for the IRS (I wouldn't)) working there, but I would not be surprised if trump put in his lackeys in the IRS too.

Especially lately. And it gets more screwed up when you have that trump lackey Dejoy messing up the mail (I think his original purpose was to mess up the mail so votes en-route via the US Mail would be messed up). Dejoy claims that he's fixing the USPS but I seriously doubt it. I truly think he was put in place of the USPS to mess up the mail so trump would win. Why would someone take out perfectly good sorting machines (some from what I heard were brand new)?

Prescriptions are being delayed / messed up (if you have them mailed to you). Packages are not being delivered on time (let alone all of the package thieves / porch pirates we have out there, or not being delivered (piles of undelivered mail left in postal centers, etc.).

I don't understand why Delay / Dejoy is still there at the USPS. I wish Biden would kick this guy to the curb. Maybe somehow he will engineer a workaround. I am surprised that they (the IRS) threatened you w/ 'tax court' already? What? It does seem like a childish response by them.

Good luck and best wishes to you in getting this resolved. And also, thank you for sharing your frustrating story w/ all of us on DU, it gives me fair warning to check, double check, triple check anything I do this year w/ the IRS, being that things seem so messed up. Especially since they've gone through 3 waves of stimulus checks out the door, tax code changes (in 2017), trump incompetence in running everything into the ground, and tax due dates being changed due to covid (last year, and this year too, to 5/17/21).

I wonder if you're close to an IRS Center where you and your accountant can sit down with them one on one to figure out what the hell is going on? I know there's one here in STLMO, but I don't know if they're meeting w/ folks in the real world since covid started.

reached back into my tax filings 3 or 4 years and said I owed them money. This was the first time in many years that I had done my taxes on my own. This was because I had gotten sick and had to retire.

I thought that, well, maybe I screwed up, although I never understood it. Time passed, and as I was endeavoring to square it away, they suddenly dropped the claim. I didn't owe them anything.

Then the State started it up. It was a small amount of money, I was sick and lacked cash flow, so I just decided to pay it, and get them out of my life. I arranged an auto pay, so I could stave them off while I searched for money to cover the relatively small amount they say I owe.

So, I have been waiting for the stimulus check so I can just send it on to the State. That would about cover it. Well, nope, no check.

If the Feds hold the money to send it to the State, that's fine, but I would like to know. Someone else on DU has an auto pay, and they received their money, so I had hope. Not any more, however. Now, I'm mad, and feel like I'm being d*cked around.

I want to pay what I owe, but I never felt like I really owed them, anyway. I was just paying to get them to go away.

9. I get what you are saying,,,,

Mar 2021

We are just going to pay what they say we owe for 2018 then amend 2019 ~ we should get a refund from that year,,,, but like you, we just want them to go away,,,, we are not tax cheats and we are not wealthy,,,, we are older and seriously do not want the stress of this. So instead of doing it all together in one fell swoop and pay the net difference,,,, with the way they are operating right now,,,, we will just pay it and wait for a refund.
I sincerely hope you get yours 'fixed' and soon.

10. We are not having a problem with the IRS, but with NC tax people.

We did some day trading for kicks in 2018. We made a couple of thousand. Too little to pay taxes so we didn't have to fill out tax forms. NC sent us a bill for a few thousand dollars in taxes, penalties, and interest. They figured it by adding up how much we received when we sold the shares. They didn't bother with subtracting how much we paid for the stocks. They would not accept copies of our stock trades showing what we paid and what we received. We ended up having to file a federal form and then file an NC tax form. We still day trade a little but now we make out federal and state forms.

couple of years ago we made $930 in rental income. The IRS claims we made $93,000. We faxed the form back- got a letter saying, "it was being reviewed."

I called and called- no one answers the phones.
