Coronavirus infections are on the rise yet again, all across the U.S.
The big picture: America may be at the beginning of a fourth wave in the pandemic. It will almost certainly be far less deadly than the previous three, but this persistent failure to contain the virus has real consequences, and will only make it harder to put COVID-19 behind us.
By the numbers: On average, roughly 63,000 Americans per day were diagnosed with coronavirus infections over the past week. Thats a 17% increase from the week before, and echoes the rising caseloads of the pandemics second wave last summer.
Average daily caseloads increased over the past week in 25 states. The biggest spikes were in Michigan and New York.

(45,544 posts)MAGAts up there are refusing to follow the governor's guidelines and claiming the increased cases in red counties is proof the governor's guidelines don't work.
Here in DC, we can always tell who is a Trumpster here for a protest, because they'll be indoors maskless in bars and restaurants. Local liberals will sit outdoors or get takeout and wear masks.

(58,785 posts)almost no vaccinated people can become infected and spread it. The lack of hosts means the virus dies down dramatically, to a point that we can stomp it out where it does pop up among those not immune.
IronLionZion
(45,544 posts)That's great for people who are vaccinated but many more are patiently waiting for it.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)And patience as you say, but we're so fortunate in the U.S. that all adults who want to be vaccinated will be before long.
Estimating 80% of all adults fully vaccinated by the end of June and continuing, but that could be higher. That doesn't include those who will have had just their first shot, but that confers 80% immunity.

(15,555 posts)I see them everywhere in the northern part of my county. They think they're proving something by not following guidelines. They're actually proud of their stupidity.

(45,544 posts)A lot of maskholes have these anecdotes where they know of someone who wore masks and got COVID, so that means masks cause COVID.

(81,519 posts)Only problem, the Stupid isnt confine-able. It has an adverse impact on us good guys who are wearing masks, keeping our distance, and cooperating by following the guidance of the medical experts.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)all deaths will be among the unvaccinated. Studies of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines show 90% of those vaccinated don't become infected (i.e., hosts for the virus) so can't spread it.
Reportedly at this rate over 80% of adults should be vaccinated by July 4.

(15,555 posts)I'm starting to wonder why someone like me who is fully immunized should even care about my "fellow Michigander" who refused throughout this pandemic to follow the orders.

(4,959 posts)and says she has no plans to add more restrictions. Obviously if people refuse to follow them even when they are in place, there's not much she can do to change that, but I'm quite disturbed by her recent statements. Like she's given up.
I'm in a very blue county in Michigan. We aren't spiking the way some of the rural counties are, but it's not just MAGAts who are making things worse at this point, I can tell you that for sure.
(Please know that i am not an apologist for MAGAts, lol, I hope this post doesn't come across this way. I'm just horrified at what's going on around me, and scared... our vaccines are not going smoothly - most people in my age group (just under 50) are driving down to Ohio to get vaccinated. I don't have that luxury so I'm just waiting.... and waiting... for my turn, and hoping that the supply is here when I qualify next week...)

(21,631 posts)Mark Poloncarz announced in a press conferencr yesterday that the county increase is coming primarily from younger people. Older ones are getting vaccinated and their positive numbers are going down. Younger ones are going on spring breaks, or partying locally. Plus, during the lull when cases were going down in February, Cuomo relaxed some restrictions. Various businesses went to court to force their right to be open and won.
Then we had a couple of unusually beautiful and warm weeks in March. People who had been cooped up for the winter couldn't wait to get out and about.
Vaccinated older people, good weather, stimulus checks, and restrictionns being eased up all added up to people acting like the pandemic is over. Cabin fever snd pandemic fatigue.
Erie county's positive rate is up to 8% now. And nobody is listening to the warnings.

(275 posts)So far as of March 30th 16.1% of the entire US population is fully vaccinated. I have no stats on how many have had the first vaccination but I have to guess it's at least twice that, probably more. So at least 1/3 of the population has at least been partially vaccinated. I would think without any vaccine we most likely would be in the midst of the worst wave.

(6,232 posts)Michigan repubs are doing all they can to take away the Strong Lady from Michigan's power. Gov Whitmer went through the MI Health Department for Covid rules then. She is pushing vaccinations now.

(4,959 posts)People in my county are driving 3 hours across the state, or down to Ohio.
And our governor (DEM, btw) says she has no plans to increase restrictions on businesses again. She recently relaxed restaurant, theater, and stadium restrictions. And look at us now?
It's so fucked.

(658 posts)I finally got the vaccine because I know a township trustee that got me an appointment. I was never contacted by the Health dept, or was able to get an appt. with the pharmacies online. IWe also tried to get an appointment for Ford Field in Detroit. NOTHING
I was finally able to get my husband an appointment for his 1st shot in a different county 45 minutes away for the middle of April. We feel so lucky!
Now younger people are eligible for the vaccine....but so many retired people are still waiting their turn...

(11,624 posts)...and since they opened back up to tourists the numbers are increasing. The governor said we could open up to tourists safely. I wonder what he says now.
As we go out for necessary business and chores only we see tourists everywhere--many with their masks off. Social distancing seems to be a thing of the past, too.

(8,935 posts)This is just a long first wave.
I would consider a first wave stopped, when we no longer need a mask mandate, then a cases increase to where we need another mask mandate. This has not happened.
