If Mitt Romney wins the R nomination Obama will win by a landslide. It is not exactly fair, but then again neither are the Republicans. Romney will lose almost soley based on his religion. There is far too broad a spectrum of religious right voters that would NEVER vote for a Mormon. Sorry mitt, I know it sucks, but look at the bigots you've aligned yourself with.
Mitt Romney, the stay home canindate.

(859 posts)The right wing will still vote for him out of hate for Obama, and because of the religious rights criticism of Romney the illusion of him being moderate will get many centrist votes, also once he gets the nomination the MSM will stop really criticizing him with his most fervent republican critics changing their mind about him.

(35,699 posts)A few evangelicals might balk but most would swallow hard and vote for Mitt if they thought he really was with them on social issues and heath care and understood their economic situation. But there are enough doubts in all three areas to curb what enthusiasm they might otherwise have.

(859 posts)Republicans almost never win debates against democrats, yet they still somehow can win in the court of public opinion half the time.

(14,180 posts)decide between a Satanist (the Mormon Romney) or a n****r (Obama).
Psychology professors will be able to use this to illustrate the principle of 'cognitive dissonance' for the next 100 years.

(37,540 posts)He has even surprised me at his ability to pathologically lie about Obama's record and his own record.
It's always principal over principle with this guy. His smarmy, flawed recitation of America the Beautiful, not withstanding, he is just another empty suit that wants to exploit government for the interests of the 1%.

(24,412 posts)His Mormonism (which should be off the table on our side in terms of an "issue" might be a problem among GOP voters (i.e. fundies) but I think that the larger problem for him and the GOP is that, given that this election will turn largely on the economy and which candidate can best manage/repair it. As such, I think that Mitt will come off looking like the living embodiment of the 1% while Obama comes off MUCH more credibly as part of the 99% Plus, there is that uncertainty about where Romney stands, specifically is he going to be able to credibly place himself far enough to the right to keep the conservatives/teabaggers but not so far to the right to keep the indies and "moderates"? IMHO Romney will have a MUCH more difficult job convincing people that he deserves to be elected POTUS than Obama does convincing people that he should be allowed to keep his job as POTUS for another four years. The only other candidate that could conceivably do better against Obama is Huntsman but it's all but certain that he won't win the nomination for a number of reasons. Aside from their fevered delusions, all of the other GOPers are simply non-starters against Obama.

(15,382 posts)Let's face it, these people still cling to the lie that the President isn't a Christian, and Mormonism has been defined as a cult since they first started Sunday School. Their thinking will be, "My choice is between a Muslim and a Mormon? Why bother?" Hopefully, that attitude will keep a lot of them home.

(24,979 posts)The fundamentalists now have 10 months to get over their anti-Mormon superstitions, which you can be certain are much weaker than their anti-Obama hallucinations. I'm pretty sure their demographics are on the decline, but as long as they're a factor, the fundamentalists will vote faithfully for the conservative Republican white guy.

(3,180 posts)The religious right folks that I know have told me that they would vote for the Devil himself before voting for President Obama. They've also told me that they won't be sitting this one out. I guess we'll have to see how he polls closer to the election and see who is right.
Either way, we can't just sit around hoping the President wins. It's time to get out the vote and get the message out.

(2,542 posts)But that only means that the religious right is split up amongst the other candidates (IMO)- and those combined could make a big difference come election time. But as you said- only time will tell.

Put that story into a commercial and at the end ask if he is the one you want commanding our troops. I think most any reasonable person will say "no".

(14,180 posts)can't use that quote to run the table on elections for Prez, House and Senate, one can start building a prima facie case that the Dems don't deserve to hold power.
Romney has handed Obama re-electon on a silver platter. It's a campaign ad that will write itself.
