Soldier charged after viral video surfaces of confrontation with Black man outside his SC home

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A viral video showing a white man in Richland County, South Carolina confronting a Black man who was walking on the sidewalk outside of his home has led to an arrest.

The sheriff confirmed Jonathan Pentland has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault and battery. That charge carries a maximum penalty of a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.

According to Shirell Johnson, who posted the video, the incident happened in a subdivision of The Summit, which has a Columbia address but is technically outside the city's limits. The video does not show what started the conflict. Johnson did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking further details.

Who is Shirell Johnson?

Shirell Johnson posted the now viral video on Facebook.

She said she walking in a neighborhood in South Carolina with a friend on Monday, April 12, 2021, when she saw the drama unfold.

Johnson said that the video was recorded by another woman, before being sent to her to post online.

She added that she did not know the alleged victim until the incident.

She wrote on Facebook: "The young lady recording the video also did not know [him] until last night.

But now he’s got to pay the fine and face the court martial that is sure to proceed out of this. But once he’s mustered out of the army, the Feds had best keep an eye on him. He is stupid but he’s also dangerous and is almost certain to gravitate to one or another right wing nazi militia.

Let me also say that, if his wife is actually the one who posted the video, I sincerely hope this bald headed sack of steroids doesn’t take out his anger on her. I doubt he does time, but there is the possibility that he ends up getting charged with ethnic intimidation or a hate crime, then he could do some time.

He was drunk, he's a racist. I'm interested to read/hear his first public statement. He has a chance to calm things down for himself a lot if his statement is thoughtfully crafted. But the standard for these Trump loving racists is to give a half assed apology and claim victimhood. He'll probably talk about how hard this has been for he and his wife now.

They rarely think about the victim, the victim was victimized for more than just those few minutes. You think this guy wants to be on camera getting bullied? You don't think this has been and will continue to be a tough thing for him to deal with? Sounds like the victim has some health/mental problems, the last thing he needed was to be a public figure and having his life turned upside down because of it. I'm sure the victim has been getting death threats and hate messages from the MAGA crowd. He would likely be offered a Summary Court Martial, likely result would be reduction of one grade, loss of 50% pay for a month, possibly some confinement but not more than a month.

A military member can decline a Summary Court Martial, in which case they could convene a Special Court Martial. The difference is like going before a magistrate vs a full trial. While you get to have an attorney and there is a form of jury, the Special Court Martial has broad authority for punishment. Loss of all rank, loss of 2/3 pay for up to a year, a year of confinement and/or a bad conduct discharge.

The video does not show how the confrontation started or ended.

Pentland told deputies he acted out in fear for he and his wife, according to an incident report.

Shadae McCallum, who lives in the neighborhood and shot the video of the confrontation, said people in The Summit, a network of neighborhoods off Clemson Road, often walk among the various communities and it’s not out of the ordinary.

While on a walk April 12, McCallum said she saw a Black man being confronted by women who accused him of harassing their daughters.

However, on April 13 and 14, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department released a statement and incident reports alleging the Black man in the video could have been the same person involved in two incidents in the neighborhood days prior to the confrontation.

A 22-year-old Black man twice put his hand around a woman’s waist and picked up a baby without consent, according to incident reports supplied from the sheriff’s office.

Later April 14, Lott made it clear the Black man was the victim in the confrontation and is not facing any charges despite any previous allegations.

Asked if the earlier incidents led to the confrontation, [Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott ] said, “There may be some connection to it, but it doesn’t justify it.”

Not sure if the victim here was believed to be that man, the article seemed to imply that, but no other evidence was given and it was buried at the end of the article on a page of way too many ads. But may explain part of the root cause behind this incident.,

I am Not excusing this assholes behavior in any way - he has anger management issues at the least, total bully at worst - but not sure this was totally racist. The victim also questions Pentland if he has been drinking, which would also be a contributing factor

This man was trained to be a DI in the military and I see him here acting that way to a civilian - way over the top. Not cool and he needs to be disciplined strongly by his CO at the least. Probably lose a stripe and his DI days are done.

I’m a researcher by nature and always a skeptic. I say let it play out. The guy is a jerk, no doubt, but if I were sitting on a jury, I’d need context in order to convict him.

Let the facts all come out, and in all probability, there may be other instances of the guy losing his cool, or more to why he was as mad as he was.
