To the DU community: Below please find two links -- one for mental health professionals, one for the general public -- demanding that Dr. Bandy Lee be reinstated at Yale University. Dr. Lee was fired for her efforts to educate the American public on the dangers that Donald Trump posed to this country, including her most recent, must-read book, "Profile of a Nation: Trump's Mind, America's Soul."
In 2020, I did a series of three interviews with Dr. Lee that I posted on this forum. In the first, we discussed the specific personality features that made Trump a dangerous president. The second focused on how Trump was tearing the nation apart. In the third, we provided a discussion predicting January 6. I am currently working on another interview.
I am hoping that community members will not only sign the petition, but will share it with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, in support of Dr. Bandy Lee. Thank you in advance for your support on this important issue. I will be sending Dr. Lee a link to this OP/thread, so please feel free to express your support for her to read in the comments.

It's curious: none of the opposition is claiming that Dr. Lee is wrong in what she says -- no calls for public discussion and debate of the important issues she raises -- they just want to force her to be silent.

(73,537 posts)I've been networking with a large number of friends and associates that I've coordinated with over the last 50 years. This includes some people that I haven't had much -- if any -- contact with in decades. Two who have been university professors are focused on getting groups from colleges and universities to issue statements supporting Dr. Lee. And others are focused on the teachers unions at public schools.
At the same time I coordinate with them, and am sending the "professional" link to old co-workers, my primary focus remains on the grass roots. This strange life I am experiencing has convinced me that it is at the grass roots level that I am most likely to encounter people with a healthy sense of justice. And for exactly that reason, it is my honor to talk with you! And so again, I thank you.

(73,537 posts)First, I think it is important to say that it goes well beyond Dershowitz. He was just the dickhead, and his threat was just the excuse to do what others had been pressuring Yale to do. Second, I think it is best if I have Dr. Lee provide as many details as she and the legal team are comfortable with at this time, in the next interview. Once lawyers are involved, I've always made it a practice to be careful of what I say publicly. But to put it into context, you will recall that when the first book -- "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump" -- came out, Bandy was frequently interviewed on television. And all of a sudden, those interviews stopped. And further news-worthy events were ignored.
That was, by no coincidence, when my series of interviews began. After all, I come from a line of "hedge masters" from the Old Sod, back when educating the Irish was illegal in their own land. And, if I do say so myself, those interviews included a number of questions that couldn't be asked by polite interviewers on television.
Your question is the key. I hope that we are able to provide a fuller answer to it soon.
TheRickles
(2,061 posts)Maybe those who are pulling Dershowitz's strings also have the goods on a Yale higher-up or two. We're looking forward to hearing about your interviews.

I read the book she edited when it first came out. No surprises there. I had been so disturbed by the idea of Trump becoming president that I told my husband that if he won, he would destroy the country and that we should consider getting out.
That's a long story for another time. I was ready to go , but he wasn't. I'm now a widow and thanks to circumstances and then Covid, still here.
Trump came damn close. People's behavior can be predicted.

(2,065 posts)She really wasn't kidding around. All of America's guardian angels must have been working overtime to get Trump sidelined to the extent that he now is, but the work of marginalizing and discrediting him is far from over. Just think - Trump has spent his whole life carefully studying the intricate mechanisms of demagoguery, but even more than that, subconsciously, his whole personality was absolutely driven by a deep victimization complex, a desire to get even with the world, a confrontive and divisive personality that cannot acknowledge the possibility of true cooperation and sharing or the needs of anyone other than himself, and an amazing ability to lie, lie, lie, and deny, deny, deny, and to blame, blame, blame, projecting all responsibility for everything out onto others, and never accepting any responsibility himself. It seemed for all the world that Trump is genuinely incapable of telling the truth - ever.
What's even more scary has been how attractive and seductive the whole siren call of fascism has been for our nation, and how Donald Trump successfully maneuvered himself into a position of power and authority in which few, if any, were willing to stand up to him. Republican Senators like Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz went overnight from being vocal critics of Trump to being his sycophantic lap dogs - like, what the HECK is going on here? They seemed to be kind of like the pod people in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".
And within all of this context, the bravery and heroism of Dr. Bandy Lee is truly remarkable. After all, she could have just hidden behind the Goldwater Rule, as did so many others in her profession.
SergeStorms
(19,201 posts)Trump has been groomed as a Russian asset for quite some time. When you have the full support of Russian intelligence, and the personal attention of Vladimir Putin to guide you, you can turn into the strongest force against democracy in a hurry. They appealed to Trump's vanity, and their most precious asset was in place and ready to go. Throw in interference on Facebook, Twitter etc. and turning right-wing Americans into drooling Trump-Nazis was a breeze.
We were damn lucky we still had a free press.
H2O Man
(73,537 posts)The news regarding Manafort & fiend this week documented the Putin effort to promote his puppet Donald. I do not think that people realize that was just one small part of what the intelligence agencies knew, but that could not be included in the Mueller Report. It is a rot that went deep into our social-political system, and included Russian funds being laundered through the NRA (and more) for rabid right-wing republicans. And the truth is, similar funding continues through other cut-outs.
Many thanks for your timely reminder!
