How Jimmy Carter's Presidency Was Really 'Ahead of His Time,' According to New Documentary

The legacy of the oldest living former president is getting a fresh look with a new documentary.

Jimmy Carter has been out of the White House for more than 40 years and, after decades as a Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian, he has been living a quiet life with his wife of almost 75 years, Rosalynn Carter, in their tiny Georgia hometown of Plains.

-snip-

But did Carter's most famous political failure, losing re-election to Ronald Reagan, come to overshadow his many White House successes?

That's the argument of the documentary Carterland, which premiered this month at the Carter Center in Atlanta. (Distribution plans are pending.)

The Reagan propaganda machine, aka the MSM, did a very effective job on him.

They never gave him credit for taking over the presidency when many Americans had lost faith in their government after Nixon and Watergate and the Vietnam War and the Oil Embargo of 1973. To listen to his detractors, you would think he caused all those problems.

The Reaganites did a masterful job of discrediting - about the only thing they did well other than spread corruption deep into the fiber of this country.

...to make Carter look bad about the hostages, why were so many willing to fall for it, as if it really had something to do with Reagan achieving something Carter couldn't?

Film Festival. I heard an interview on GPB last week with the 2 brothers that made this documentary. It reminded me (again) why I have always supported Jimmy Carter.

The latter broke the back of stagflation, at the cost of raising the prime rate and consumer interest rates to incredible numbers for two years (into Reagan's term)-- Carter knew it would hurt his reelection, cause a recession, but appointed Volcker as Fed Chairman anyway. Reagan then took the credit for the end of stagflation and the economic rebound.
