Alabama will end its participation in all federally-funded pandemic unemployment programs on June 19.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced the move this afternoon, making the state the latest to end the programs that added money to unemployment benefits and began last year as a response to massive layoffs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
-snip-
In her announcement, Ivey alluded to the programs contributing to a labor shortage that is compromising the continuation of our economic recovery. She cited the states current unemployment rate of 3.8 percent, the lowest in the Southeast.
As Alabamas economy continues its recovery, we are hearing from more and more business owners and employers that it is increasingly difficult to find workers to fill available jobs, even though job openings are abundant, Ivey said. Our Department of Labor is reporting that there are more available jobs now than prior to the pandemic. Jobs are out there.

So sending millions of dollars of federal money to consumers weekly harms a state's economy, even when that state already has one of the region's lowest unemployment rates? Maybe they should send out goon squads to aide restaurateurs by locking wage slaves into shackles and marching them into the businesses.

Some states will need to maintain through September. Others wont. Alabama does not need to maintain it under the manner in which it was sold.

(24,703 posts)Amount and Duration of Unemployment Benefits in Alabama
The minimum amount you will receive is $45; the maximum amount you will receive is $275. You may receive benefits for a maximum of 26 weeks. (In times of very high unemployment, additional weeks of benefits may be available.)
Take care....

(17,006 posts)the extra unemployment insurance Im not sure you do know that. It didnt expand Medicaid so maybe so fewer people have health insurance. It has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. Maybe people arent willing to work for minimum wage without health insurance with a bunch of people too stupid to get a vaccine.

(914 posts)It doesnt improve from there.
The answer to peoples needs isnt a very short term stop gap measure held in place at the whim of those you describe.
Im shocked that people are acting shocked at what was known.

(17,006 posts)You are assuming if they take away expanded UI they are going to replace it with some long term aid and they arent. At this time, expanded UI is the best the are going to get.

(7,403 posts)Nursing homes and meatpacking plants have been hit especially hard hit by COVID. People are still leery of going back to work at those location, I presume. Daycare has been hard hit as well. And daycare is a double whammy because lack of daycare is keeping many women home caring for children. Things just aren't going back together the way they came apart - and that was fully expected. Punitive Republican measures will only exacerbate the problem.

Go find the book Rising Tide about the 1927 flood.
Mississippi and Arkansas police did exactly that. Re-enslaved blacks at gun point to work the levees. A prime reason for the mass migration of blacks from the south to places like Chicago, Detroit, and New York City.

(7,418 posts)Her state has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the region. Also, that doesn't wash when you are turning down what is currently a $3 million interjection of cash into your state's economy weekly, money that will be spent and flow into state coffers through sales taxes.

(7,418 posts)They didn't use the ambiguous "through June" that Montana, South Carolina and Arkansas did. No, they said it would all end on June 19. They are using Juneteenth to return the state's wage slaves to servitude. The message couldn't be clearer.
