Surely, a handful of sane Retrumplicans won't save us.
Hell, at this point, I'm pretty frickin sure our Constitution won't save us.
We are the only thing that can save us.
Only an overwhelming defeat of the current Retrumplican Party...accross the board from City Councils, to State Legislatures, to National Offices is going to save this country.
The Retrumplican Party is out to destroy everything that stands in their way to autocracy and fascism.
Fucking Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney are NOT going to save this country. They can't even save themselves.
We are at a Zero/Sum point in this country, probably at the most perilous moment since 600K Americans were killed in a bloody Civil War.
The only way to pull us back from the abyss is to vote against Retrumplicans from President to Dogcatcher in such overwhelming numbers that can't be ignored.

(15,655 posts)GA legislature has empowered themselves to reject election results they dont agree with, by firing election board members who dont follow their orders.
More state legislatures are planning on giving themselves this power, so, without passage of HR1, just how can Dems provide an overwhelming defeat against the GOP?
The fight isnt in November 2022, the fight is NOW. HR1/HR4 are the last protections for democracy, and the streets must be filled with voting rights protestors all summer long, especially in the streets of WV and AZ.

(2,966 posts)...we have to get the 100M+ non-voters to the polls.
Responsible estimates indicate that over 100 million Americans who are eligible to vote did not vote in the 2020 election. They weren't registered, or - if they were - they couldn't be bothered to vote.
Many younger people interviewed stated that one of the main reasons is because it's such a pain in the neck to get properly registered. Others indicated that Trump was so controversial that there'd be tons of votes against him and their votes wouldn't be necessary. What I call the "everything will take care of itself" excuse.
This overwhelming defeat you speak of cannot come about until we get voter turnout significantly up from where it is...a task make all the more difficult with all the voter suppression laws being passed.

(9,500 posts)One was not able to vote because she lost her photo ID and wasn't aware that she could cast a provisional ballot (& wasn't told by the poll worker)
One was not a guaranteed Democratic vote ( essentially hates both sides)
We can rant about non-voters, but I have not seen anything on what makes those people tick.

(2,212 posts)We are always playing defense against these bastards which means that they just wear us down over time and gain inch by inch.
We need a plan that always works, along with a strong & consistent offense like a 50 state plan.
Dems and Indies need to unite like never before. Our democracy depends on it.

(8,310 posts)Run for Something recruits and supports young first-time candidates running for local office with the goal of building progressive infrastructure at the state and local level. They recruit people to run for office, any office. They talk to every person whos considering running. They connect candidates to resources. No one needs to be alone in this process.

(73,604 posts)I agree with you 100%. It is great that the institutions have held up at all, but the fact is they cannot endure the current attacks for long. We need a non-violent grassroot's movement now. Our country is at that point.

(1,910 posts)Trump had full Twitter and Facebook and all the powers of the Presidency. He had free campaign prop of Air Force One. He controlled the Post Office. He had all the 74 million of which some now were appalled by Jan 6th. And they still lost! Lost the Presidency, lost AZ, lost GA, lost the Senatorships in GA. The military command said they would not help Trump. The Supreme Court did not step in.
I am wondering why the negative thinking? Biden has a high approval rating. Demographics are in our favor. Trump has no Twitter which reached many of the voters not that into voting.
Just losing Twitter alone will cost Trump or his picked guy millions of votes. Let alone dying demographics and those million who were turned off by Jan 6th.
We have 4 years to prepare. 4 years for Stacy to get everything in place for the GA election. None of the voter suppression stuff can overcome that because Repugs will also lose some voters to it.
Geez, we won and keep winning. Swing states are not going back. PA, MI, WI have Dem governors so no bad voter bills get passed. So the blue wall holds, we try to keep AZ and GA, which with demographics is not impossible. NC metro tech areas are changing fast towards Dems. Texas is slower but still gradually trending our way.
Simply no reason to be negative. We saved ourselves, the young voters helped, the women of color helped, suburban women helped, demographic trends helped....and none of that is going away.

(9,897 posts)The Senate was supposed to be about 51 or 52 D's and we got 48 +2 I's.
Yes, Biden won, but of the 7M+ difference, about 5M of that is from California alone.
TX was rumored in play, as was FL and OH. None of them were even competitive.
Yes, we won and Joe is exceeding my expectations for his first 100 days.
Yes, this is FAR BETTER than the alternative...
BUT, do not for one second buy into the meme that Trump cost the R's so dearly that the sane people over there will revolt.
Trump is running NOW for 2024. The GQP is busily laying the groundwork at the state and local levels to steal the nation-wide presidential totals again in an Electoral College only path to power. Once there? The 'law' and its protections are done. The 'constitution' will be voided and Trump will declare himself king, using his minions and the simple minded in law enforcement and military positions to stamp out dissent.
Trump must go for this nation to survive, and that is not as crazy as it looks when written or typed out any longer. The Liz Cheney loyalty purge is more than most are perceiving or admitting. There is an active attempt to undermine and remove the democratic republic that we currently have in favor of autocracy and a new hereditary aristocracy to boot.
About 50,000 total votes across 3 states (WI, GA, PA) kept us from reliving 2016-2020. In 2016, about that same total of about 50,000 votes from 3 states (PA, MI, WI) inflicted Trump on the nation.
He is running a vengeance purge of the GQP now.
If he ever regains power, the simple act of being a Democrat may become against the law, and any dissent will be met with harsh retribution.
It is not negativity, it is reality.

I'm with you, Jon. This isn't over by a long shot. It's time to roll up our sleeves and put on brass knuckles and get to fighting.

(12,132 posts)No matter how many recounts show Biden won, they whole-heartedly believe with every fiber of their being that we cheated and stole votes through rigged voting machines and they are HIGHLY motivated to correct that at the next election if not sooner. They will never accept a D win. They are so out of their minds mad at the election results that they will stop at nothing to win and they firmly believe they have more than enough numbers to do it.
Any even slight let-up on our side will be bad and we will have to fight 10 times harder to overcome whatever cheating THEY do just to break even.
I am not even slightly comfortable yet. None of the Rs I know are backing down an inch and we can't either.

(1,450 posts)and local elections right after the 2012 election. My push was for more money to be spent advertising for candidates on RADIO in areas where the Clear Channel and the RW media seemed to have a lock. We could have advertised even on their stations because they take money from anyone. One reason why RW talk radio was so powerful was and still is because they are on the air and have a captive audience for at least 60 percent of adult waking hours. Mom driving the kids to and from sporting events, families going to and from school events, music stations, Sunday church services... The opportunities are enormous and the proof is in the RW pudding of how successful the RW talking heads have been. They didn't start out that way, but like the old DJs that pushed certain songs and literally made them hits simply because they were played on the air. But there seems to be fever by the Dems for spending huge sums of money on TV cable ads and events that only play to the choir.
People listen to what is put on the air. People watch what is played on the air. You can never hum a song you never heard. It's just that simple. But now it's too late.

And of course also they're planning on "outvoting" us, hopefully the last time they'll need to pretend they did.
