Waiting for the IRS to make an adjustment to my taxes (unemployment related)

We filed our taxes in February, and we owe just over $4,000.

That was before the Biden plan exempted the first $10,200 in unemployment benefits from fed taxes. In our case, that means that roughly $18,000 in 2020 income was made tax free after we filed our taxes. I’m thinking that will significantly reduce our taxes owed.

Thing is, the IRS is handling these adjustments. I keep checking my account at the IRS website, and I keep seeing the message that an adjustment is being made and my info is unavailable. Taxes payments are due on Monday, May 17.

Any word on what will happen if Monday rolls around and my adjustment still hasn’t been calculated?

I would check into this option if it looks like might need to do so.

Best of luck.

I tried to reach them today myself.

NO LUCK.

you are still expected to pay on time. which is stupid if you have variable income and need to do your taxes to see what you might owe. if you need extra time to do them how the hell do you know what to pay?

I think you can go from there if you can estimate the taxes and figure out a plan from there.

I rather think some help is needed from someone that can assist.

Contacting the IRS is a nightmare right now!

The ops agi is 18,000 less so shouldn’t be hard to figure

Wherever they got their taxes done could easily help them

I was just telling them how to avoid penalty and interest

A week later they did it again.....They have acknowledged their error, but no one can tell him when they are going to give his money back...I told him that it is time to talk to his Congress person.

I just did mine on line yesterday and I think there was an error (H & R Block for free...go type in "myfreetaxes.com&quot . Both the Fed and State were verified and they didn't seem to think there was an error since all my info is in the IRS computers at the State and Fed headquarters. tRump really screwed up my taxes and I can't afford to hire someone to do them for me and my dad died about 2 years ago...he always helped me out, doing them ourselves on paper and mailing it all in. We never had a problem.

I never got my 2nd Stimulus of $600 and that was figured out for me too (line 30). I have called the IRS 4 times due to the missing payment (it was mailed in Jan but I had to wait to see if they could find it before doing my taxes). The IRS people told me not to wait for the IRS to find the missing $600 and file my taxes and line 30 would take care of it. They were right. I have been on hold with them for 1 1/2 hours and the last time I called two weeks ago I only had to wait 10 min. This is the phone # 800-919-9835.

The USPS is really fucked up and lost my 2nd stimulus and 6 of the checks I mailed to pay March utilities and bills. This year I chose direct deposit or withdraw for the first time in my life. Last year was the second time I did them on line for free (I make under $35,000 and am eligible).

since I have not been able to get thru for a couple weeks. What a pain in the ass. Said I owed 4k for 2018 and paid 3/3. Called 3/22 and was told my accountant just left off two numbers and get those and fax in, they would fix it. I did that 3/25. Faxed successfully. This morning I was told they still have not processed my fax that far behind, month and half. Check back in two weeks. Since I cannot get thru during the day I guess I will set alarm to get up at 5am.

They say open 7-7. Eastern time? So 4am here. Oh no.... the3y may be open at 7 bkut don't start answering calls 'til 8am. I mean, wtf.

Good luck.

Into a bank account that hasnt changed in years, I'd soon be beaten with sock full of pennies. Frankly, they don't give a damn about customer (taxpayer) service. They know we have to deal with them, so why should they, I suppose.

As bad...the passport renewal section of the State Department. I sent mine in for a renewal in February...into a blackhole apparently. After eight weeks with it not showing up on the status website, I started calling the 1-800 number to talk to someone. I'd call at all hours, and the recording would always say I'd have a 30 minute wait. Finally, after a 2.5 hour wait one day, I spoke to an actual human. He took my info and said they would initiate an "investigation". It's the middle of May; I still have no passport. I suppose I can take comfort in the fact they've deposited my check.
