New research from PLOS One suggests that Trump supporters may share some of the narcissistic traits that were exhibited by the former U.S. president himself during his 2020 re-election campaign. The study revealed that people who scored higher in the antagonistic and indifferent facets of narcissism were more likely to say they were voting for Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
Donald Trumps leadership style was characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance and a disregard for others two key characteristics of narcissism. While many psychologists have pointed out Trumps narcissistic personality traits, little research has considered whether his supporters might have similar narcissistic tendencies.

(47,583 posts)All the studies in the world still won't make it entirely plausible. He couldn't be more unlikable and unappealing. I could see a few people buying his cartoonish routine, but 74 million is beyond comprehension. It is still absolutely horrifying to me.

(47,583 posts)especially people like those who stormed the Capitol, but when I think of some individuals that I know personally, I don't think it is that simple. Years of brainwashing from Fox News and other right-wing sources have seriously corrupted some people's minds. Many of them seem to be defensive and angry, making them very vulnerable to brainwashing. Their problems are individual, but the propaganda that tends to work for them is universal.
Like people who turn to religion for answers, these people saw their answers in Trump, all seeing what served them in particular. I suppose that is why a lot of fundamentalists are drawn to Trump as some sort of bizarre messiah. Perhaps the common denominator might be vulnerability, but manifested in various forms.

(47,583 posts)but I still can't comprehend the whole picture. I feel like this is how sane, rational people felt in 1930s Germany. There is a certain mass madness that is just too big and too overwhelming to absorb.

(81,451 posts)Seems to me they still stand with that bastard because he made it okay to be out n proud about some really shitty, selfish, short-sighted, proudly-ignorant attitudes they really should NOT feel proud about.
NOBODY should be allowed to be proud of that! Dont we try to teach our kids thats NOT the way to be?
Dont we aspire to teach our kids about honesty, truth, good sportsmanship, and the folly of lying to yourself to try to change reality into what you WANT it to be rather than acknowledging what IS? Truth? Reality (NOT some reality show)???
Cant we even agree on something as simple, basic, and THRUTHFUL as this?
I seriously fear that America as we knew it is dying. And we have so much crank media that wont stop reinforcing all that cockeyed bullshit, which only ensures that it wont fade or go away.
The shit coming out of Kevin McCarthy this morning (and originating with the detestable trump) has left me extremely discouraged.

(22,048 posts)...all I can say is, "Really?!"
Sometimes these scientific studies-- which are real and are performed with professionalism and follow the scientific method-- just reveal the obvious.
Trump's supporters are like just him. They're racists, misogynists, narcissists and just plain ugly people. A casual observation of these people over the past 5 years makes this abundantly clear.
Still, thanks to the scientists who had the insights, time and funding to make it official:
The people who follow Trump are just like him. They're assholes.

(16,497 posts)Before this, if you had asked me to explain why Chump appeals to some people, I could not have given you an answer. I've always been thoroughly repulsed by him and baffled as to why some people are drawn to him like flies to a rotting carcass.
This also explains why so many of his fans are meaner than a pack of rattlesnakes. It all comes down narcissism, his AND theirs. They're mean because they're narcissists, like him, AND they are drawn to him because they recognize a kindred spirit.
Like attracts like. Birds of a feather flock together. 🦚🦚🦚🦚🦚

(4,611 posts)Trumpism is a cult of assholism, full stop. He appealed to every asshole in the country who spent their high school years tormenting the short kid in class, and then went on to spend their entire adult life being forced to pretend to having "matured" past that phase. This was their coming out party, their legitimization, their revenge on the society that forced them to repress their true impulses for so long.
