Elliot Page beams in shirtless poolside shot: 'Trans BB's first swim trunks'

Elliot Page is radiating summer joy.

The Oscar nominee, 34, posted a shot of himself shirtless by a pool on Monday, showing off his red swim trunks and abs.

"Trans bb's first swim trunks," Page wrote, adding the hashtags #transjoy #transisbeautiful.

The shot is the first shirtless one Page has posted on Instagram since having top surgery, a procedure he previously revealed he underwent earlier this year. Top surgery for transgender men is a surgical procedure to remove breast tissue (subcutaneous mastectomy).

But seriously, very cool to see him happy and beaming. This is the actually the first picture I've seen post-transition, so it helps me to visualize the "new" Page.

What will happen with regard to the female character he played on "Umbrella Academy", Vanya Hargreeves? It will be interesting to see what the writers do (if anything) and how this affects the story and character.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Umbrella_Academy_(TV_series)#Casting

Elliot Page[a] as Vanya Hargreeves / The White Violin / Number Seven, a meek violinist who is somewhat alienated from her siblings because she has no apparent supernatural abilities. In reality she can unleash great force by focusing on sound, an ability her father suppressed with drugs to protect her and those around her. T.J. McGibbon and Alyssa Gervasi portray Vanya as a teenager and a 4-year-old, respectively.

Maybe it will turn out they were actually traveling between alternate universes and in the next one, Vanya is male.

I agree, though, that Elliot Page is such a talented actor, he could play any part, any gender.

Am I the only old person on DU who feels incredible sadness seeing this creeping rise of rigid gender role identification? (A key component of fascism, by the way.)

Bring back the 60s and 70s please. When guys grew their hair out, girls could finally start wearing pants to school, and every suburban Dad ended up buying a leisure suit. Throwing OFF the rigid authoritarian gender roles from the 40s and 50s.

whatever I'll shut up

realizing it's time to pursue gender confirmation. It's okay to not understand it but it's not okay to say that bringing back the 60s and 70s needs to happen to turn back fascism.

I take your points. There's lots I wouldn't want back about the 60s or 70s

It's harder I think to understand "gender confirmation" coming from formative years where androgyny was becoming the goal. I really don't know what it's like to be young today

editing to say fascism's embrace of rigid gender roles is very real

It's a curse that comes to each of us, eventually. Maybe it's helpful to think of androgyny as a stop on the path to full liberation and self-actualization for all, rather than a final goal? As we learn new terms talk about what it's like to be human, it can enrich each of us -- if we allow it to.

You're always able to find positives

It's easy to feel were failing as a society, as a collective working class body, when systemic discrimination by gender, race, economic situation, etc festers and grows like a cancer, and rather than the body having the solidarity to reverse it, the individuals bear the burden of stepping up

edit because I hit send too early

"You're always able to find positives"

Pretty sure that's the first time anyone's ever told me that on this board.

It's true. I'll tell you, though, it's why I try to accept things I might not understand but that are moving in the same direction I am fully and without question -- because it builds power. We'll get there in the end -- maybe not until after we're gone, but we'll get there.
