CNN: CA Assault Weapons Ban Overturned

A federal judge, who compares an AR-15 to a Swiss Army knife, overturns California's ban on assault weapons

In a ruling that compared the AR-15 to a Swiss Army knife, a federal judge overturned California's longtime ban on assault weapons on Friday, ruling it violates the Second Amendment's right to bear arms.

Assault weapons have been banned in California since 1989, according to the ruling. The law has been updated several times since it was originally passed.

According to the ruling by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego, the assault weapons ban deprives Californians from owning assault-style weapons commonly allowed in other states. Benitez issued a permanent injunction Friday so the law cannot be enforced.

1. Just repeal the PLCAA that protects gun manufacturers and dealers.

Get a few thousand multi-million dollar judgments against them in short order. They'll be begging for background check laws.

Include private sellers as dealers too. Their little movie merchandise toys and patriot cosplay paraphernalia will suddenly become worthless.

...the gun industry.

I support universal background checks, but the people who want to sue the gun industry don't have gun safety as a goal.

"home defense"? You don't defend your home with military style weapons. Does this doofus even know what he's talking about? I read an article a few years ago about the appropriate weapons for self defense in the home. They are small, easy to aim and handle hand guns. The article was written by the NRA. If even THEY didn't think you should use an AR-15 for home defense, what the fuck is this judge basing his ruling on?

5. Essentially an AR is what you make of it.

There are more ideal options given the circumstances (its not going to beat a finely tuned bolt action for precision shooting or a real handgun for actual concealment), but the AR itself is a jack of all trades gun. If handguns are more ideal in personal defense situations then you can get an AR setup in a "pistol" configuration for your home (including being able to shooting pistol caliber bullets). Or you can upgrade a few features (and not buy a whole new gun) for long range shooting or upgrade a few more features and your back to the "war style" configuration.

Thats what i took from his comment. You can do almost anything with the type of platform its build around.

7. Rifles are decent home defense weapons, but most are large, long, and heavy.

ARs can be fairly compact and light.

Police use them inside buildings for defensive use only.

Gun violence awareness day. People were supposed to wear Orange in support of ending gun violence If people were supposed to wear Orange in support of ending gun violence. Ironically I found this on a gun forum rather than through any gun control source.

If you wonder why the state of US gun laws is what it is, I think that sums it up.
