I don't know what to say...disgusted...

3 white NY high school students in blackface re-enact Chris Brown-Rihanna beating

Three white high school students in Waverly, New York, performed a satirical “re-enactment” of Chris Brown’s infamous beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna, in blackface, at a pep rally in front of students, parents, community leaders, and the media.

The act has decried as racist by former students of the high school, and some have questioned the judgment of the school administrators who allowed such a show to be performed. Their students were participating in a competition to be crowned “Mr. Waverly.”

According to CNN, former Waverly High School student Vlad Chituc said, “I think it’s unconscionable that such blatant racism has been tacitly approved two years in a row.”

“The administration should be creating an environment where minorities are welcome, not the butts of racist jokes that make light of domestic violence,” said Chituc.

Another former student, Hannah Van Wie-Desisti, said, “I used to be so proud of where I came from. Not so much now due to the recent incident. I found it unfathomable that the faculty would not only approve this idea for the skit in the first place, but allow it to go on during the pep rally. I honestly don’t believe that the students meant to offend, but were just ill informed of how offending their skit actually was. The staff should have stopped it before it even started. By acting like the skit was acceptable, they are teaching their students that racism is okay and that abuse is humorous.”

Waverly students ‘re-enact’ Chris Brown-Rihanna beating

edited to add: I agree with comments in the thread, that this is not just racist but also misogynistic. This is racism and violence against women as entertainment. Not funny.

The students, staff and parents all need...what? Therapy? Sensitivity training? To be locked in a dungeon for eternity?

How does something so vile become 'entertainment' at a damned pep rally?

The staff that knew what was going to happen and allowed it to happen should be repremanded severely.

They were in a car when it happened. He tried to stop her from getting out of the car. That's when he hit her. She was never on the ground.

Imagine. Racism, misogyny, AND stupidity all rolled up in one neat package. Who would have thought?

"I honestly don’t believe that the students meant to offend, but were just ill informed of how offending their skit actually was."

They didn't mean to offend? Really? At what point can I put something on my face and arms to artificially darken my skin and claim that I didn't know that what I was doing was offensive?

Ithaca (my hometown, was there last weekend) is as enlightened and bohemian as any town can get, west of Holland. I'm really surprised their administration couldn't figure out that it's illegal to wear black face.

Someone's gonna get fired for this, and it will probably be the H.S. principal.

In my daughter's extremely uptight and white high school, the administrators went apeshit if ANY boys dressed up as, or danced like, girls in any assembly. We were watching an assembly and the admins thought that the boys were dancing like girls, so they literally pulled the plug on it. This is in Washington State in an affluent suburb.

I'm sure that what these kids did would be tolerated.. as LONG as the boys didn't act "feminine."
