The Myth of a Majority-Minority America

Tweet text:

“Speculating about whether America will have a white majority by the mid-21st century makes little sense, because the social meanings of white and nonwhite are rapidly shifting,” @albamoore1, @ProfDowellMyers, and @MorrisLevy8 write:

The Myth of a Majority-Minority America
The narrative that nonwhite people will soon outnumber white people is not only divisive, but also false.

In recent years, demographers and pundits have latched on to the idea that, within a generation, the United States will inevitably become a majority-minority nation, with nonwhite people outnumbering white people. In the minds of many Americans, this ethno-racial transition betokens political, cultural, and social upheaval, because a white majority has dominated the nation since its founding. But our research on immigration, public opinion, and racial demography reveals something quite different: By softening and blurring racial and ethnic lines, diversity is bringing Americans together more than it is tearing the country apart.

The majority-minority narrative contributes to our national polarization. Its depiction of a society fractured in two, with one side rising while the other subsides, is inherently divisive because it implies winners and losers. It has bolstered white anxiety and resentment of supposedly ascendant minority groups, and has turned people against democratic institutions that many conservative white Americans and politicians consider complicit in illegitimate minority empowerment. At the extreme, it nurtures conspiratorial beliefs in a racist “replacement” theory, which holds that elites are working to replace white people with minority immigrants in a “stolen America.”

The narrative is also false. By rigidly splitting Americans into two groups, white versus nonwhite, it reinvents the discredited 19th-century “one-drop rule” and applies it to a 21st-century society in which the color line is more fluid than it has ever been.

In reality, racial diversity is increasing not only at a nationwide level but also within American families—indeed within individual Americans. Nearly three in 10 Asian, one in four Latino, and one in five Black newlyweds are married to a member of a different ethnic or racial group. More than three-quarters of these unions are with a white partner. For more and more Americans, racial integration is embedded in their closest relationships.

She is originally from Chile, her Dad was a mix of Native Indian and Chinese and her Mother is a German born with some French white woman. My friend did an ancestry tracing thing. She is married to a Jewish man with blue eyes. My husband is white and I am a biracial woman. We laughed how international we all were!

that by around 2035-2040 whites will no longer be more than 50 percent of the population. Latinx Americans, African Americans, Asian Americas and others will constitute varying percentages of the population, but no demographic will be a majority.

What is the problem with just telling the true? Will we never have to stop worrying about white anxiety and fear from divisiveness. No one ever worried much at all about Black and other POC anxiety and fear from the actual divisiveness and racism practiced on us.

6. Latino/Hispanic is not a racial designation, though. Hispanic means

Spanish language in background, LatinX one or more of the Latin American countries. All these demographic groups are self identififed.

Obviously L/H can be any possible mix or nonmix of white, indigenous American, and every other race that arrived in Latin America or were from Spanish speaking enclaves around the world, i.e., all races. Since a lot of Spanish speaking Europeans and other Hispanic whites spread around the world, though, and in many places tended to intermarry with other white people, incuding the U.S., a significant percentage of Hispanic/LatinX identify white, while some others who are white refuse to differentiate.

Obviously, this significantly undercounts whites and thus messes up all discussions of racial percentages. Which these days almost always ignore it.

are greater with the largest, dominant demo. In America that's white. And after all, racial pride is no more exclusive to minority groups struggling for their rightful place in society than humanity's appalling histories of inhumanity are exclusive to whites.

As I said, some do choose to refuse to choose white or nonwhite, or where possible to identify with a "both" choice as a statement of inclusiveness and egalitarianism. But tyically these groups tend to lean conservative and inclined like conservatives in general to differentiate.

I mean this is America and trumpism has bought the racists against Latinx/immigrants way out into the open.

don't forget, the LatinX Americans in polls are not the mostly indigenous immigrants who slip in over the southern border with their worldly goods in backpacks. They're Americans, plenty many-generational. Plenty vote Republican and some are trumpist types themselves.

Than other so called minority groups, they aren’t treated like White people, not held in the same regard nor granted the same privilege as European-heritage whites.

Trump tapped into the growing awareness by a large percentage of white Americans that they will soon be “outnumbered” by those they consider to be non-whites. It’s that awareness/anxiety/outrage that is driving the resurgence in white nationalism.

At my age, I might not live long enough to see the numbers reach the tipping point, but I hope to live long enough to see the changing demographics of America overcome any level of voter suppression. When that day comes, I expect to see numerous white supremacist heads exploding, but unfortunately, I also fear the road to that day will be filled with much violence against POC.

In the 2010 census, over half of the Latino population in the United States considered themselves white; however, they are generally considered and portrayed as people of color.

Besides, black versus white is a much bigger social issue than non-white versus white. And the black percentage of population is stuck around 13% as the other non-white populations grow faster through immigration.

Socioeconomic status is much better tracked by ethnic group than race.
