A COVID-19 outbreak that killed two IT staffers in Manatee County government and hospitalized three others has forced the shutdown of the countys administrative building in downtown Bradenton.
At 2:30 p.m., the county announced on Facebook that it was immediately shutting down the building to the public and sending employees home. Epidemiologists with the Florida Department of Health of Manatee County are now working on contract tracing.
Its been devastating to staff and its been difficult for the organization, County Administrator Scott Hopes said. The SARS virus is still in our community and the vaccine protects people.
On Monday, one of four IT staffers who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 died, according to Hopes. A fifth IT staffer who went to the doctor on Wednesday, died at home Thursday from COVID-19.
One staffer in the department who worked closely with the other five and didnt contract the coronavirus was vaccinated. All five who contracted the virus had a sore throat as their initial primary complaint.

(82,849 posts)Five people got Covid and none of them were vaccinated. One person in the same department who didn't get sick was vaccinated. Just a coincidence, we'll be told.

The vaxed person caused this! And covid is a hoax anyway!
I am assuming Governor Death Sentence is indirectly the inspiration for tales of woe like this?

Pretty much every death from COVID from now on will be a Trump-humper. So I guess there is a silver lining.

But your point was that he was "uninformed." It's the distinction between calling a disease measles and calling it rubeola. One is a lay person's name for it, the other is the scientific name. Since those studying the impact of the disease (science and medical sources) fairly routinely refer to it as SARS COV-2, I'd hardly call it uninformed to use its scientific name.

Hes a medical doctor and epidemiologist. Hes been a vocal supporter of masks and vaccinations since the beginning, a somewhat controversial stance in our Trumpy part of Florida.

make more sense? Most people call it covid or covid-19 not sars.
Clarity in language avoids misunderstandings.

My state, Montana has been holding at 45% of the population vaccinated. It almost exactly matches the Trump margin of victory in our state. Oh, and fuckDonald Trump.

(129,913 posts)I saw recently that the Delta variant has apparently been triggering that particular symptom in the UK and it has been added to the list of COVID-19 possible symptoms. I.e., it is starting to manifest like the typical coronavirus seen in colds but is apparently much more lethal...
Researchers warn that UKs most widely established variant may be mistaken for milder illness

Headaches, a sore throat and a runny nose are the most common symptoms associated with the UKs most widely established Covid variant, researchers have said. The data, collected as part of the app-based Zoe Covid symptom study, suggests that the Delta variant first detected in India feels like a bad cold, according to Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at Kings College London, who is leading the work.
Covid is acting differently now, its more like a bad cold, he said. People might think theyve just got some sort of seasonal cold, and they still go out to parties we think this is fuelling a lot of the problem. So, whats really important to realise is that since the start of May, weve been looking at the top symptoms in all the app users, and theyre not the same as they were. So, the number one symptom is headache followed by sore throat, runny nose and fever.
According to the NHS, the classic Covid symptoms are fever, cough and loss of smell or taste. Spector said that with Delta, a cough appears to be the fifth most common symptom, and the loss of smell doesnt make the top 10. Data suggests that the Delta variant is at least 40% more transmissible than the Alpha variant first detected in Kent, and appears to double the risk of hospitalisation. It also renders vaccines somewhat less effective, particularly after only one dose.

(1,910 posts)These people made personal choices as adults. Choose not to get vaccinated, 80% plus chance they were overweight, 95% chance they were either overweight and/or another preexisting health condition, according to the statistics of who is still getting severe illness from Covid and are not very elderly.
It is what it is, drive down a crowded freeway cutting in and out of traffic on a motorcycle, or choose to not get a readily available vaccine, be around other people, while having preexisting risk factors. They made their choices.-
