Deborah Roberts grew up in a family of gun owners. But it wasn't until March this year that the 68-year-old finally pulled the trigger and purchased her own firearm.
"I think the rhetoric and how things are stirred up in the country just made me feel like, if not now, then when?" Roberts told CNN on Sunday morning at the South River Gun Club in Covington with gun shots ringing nearby.
It was Ladies Day at the range, an event put on by the National African American Gun Association's Atlanta chapter. More than a dozen women, some for the first time, came out to work on their shooting and learn about firearm safety -- and to have fun doing it.
All but one of them is African American.
They're not alone: Amid a recent nationwide surge in gun sales, these women are part of the growing coalition of gun owners that is increasingly made up of people of color, experts say.
It has been often said that we would quickly get gun control if more black people started buying guns. It appears that is in process.
Will Republicans start changing their position on gun control?
Will more women and minorities buying guns affect the way Democratic candidates approach gun control?

(5,559 posts)My gun nut brother-in-law has been happy when I've mentioned bits of news like this, he wants minorities to buy guns as he thinks it will result in our party becoming divided on gun safety.

(54,770 posts)Contrary to your opinion, Sarisataka, the extent women and minorities are buying gunz now is mostly due to white wing, usually racist, gunners who are a threat.

The dogma of gun control proponents that all new gun sales are being made by current gun owners, specifically white male conservatives.
This article indicates that is not correct. I agree with the article as my anecdotal observation matches, many minorities have been buying guns. Also the number of women buyers has been rapidly increasing. If you believe I have a problem with that, you are very mistaken. Never have I suggested there be any limitations based on race or gender.
I am very glad to see these new buyers are seeking education. If you recall, I have always been a strong proponent of getting a proper education in the safe handling and storage of firearms. Gun owners should take their responsibilities seriously.
EtA> initially you had recommended that post, now after our discussion I see you have removed it. Interesting.

Honestly, gun control has been the biggest mistake democrats have made in 30 years. No lasting legislation, more gun ownership than ever, and alienation of every rural area in the country. High price for nothing to show and no chance to even get it.
