(65,013 posts)...the government fumbled on this because they convinced themselves their prior measures had quelled the pandemic.

So, the rollout was terribly slow and inefficient.
BTW: this article is from June 5, and it was 3% fully vaxxed at that time. (8.7% at least one dose)
It says they were ramping up at that time, so it's higher 22 days later.
From "Our World In Data" they hit 9.2% fully vaxxed, 2 days ago.
Still below the global average, but less dreadful than 3%.

(23,099 posts)They were doing so good in the first phase, it's so stupid that they also developed such a strong case of hubris that they are endangering the Olymics. My estimation of them has plummeted with this stupidity.

(25,855 posts)very many vaccines there.
I wonder how they'll name the new variants that will inevitably arise during the Olympics. Apparently, it's not just the several thousand athletes, but the hundreds of thousands of coaches and officials and so on that will be there.

(7,809 posts)On the plus side, the Japanese have no trouble putting on masks. They will do that willingly at the slightest hint of the sniffles.
I sure hope that the country's covid stats don't skyrocket because of the Olympics.
