2. Im not sure how that disproves it.

Because he died means he wasnt a good guy? Seems like he stopped a very dangerous individual from hurting others and avenging someone else at the expense of his life.

Unfortunate he picked up the AR, most likely to clear it or get it away from the individual and held on to it a second or two too late. Not the best thing to do in that situation, but then its hard to 100% know what your brain is going to do in high stress situations.

Was indeed accurate, 5he good guy did stop the bad guy.

Ms Watts tweet gives a false impression of how the situation developed, unsurprisingly.

4. I think the underlying argument is: How are we supposed to know who is the "good guy"

and who is the "bad guy" when they both have guns? Notwithstanding the reflexive police habit of blasting everything in sight, if the cops can't figure out who the good guy is, how can we?

If two guys are blasting away in public, if they both get killed, who am I supposed to mourn?

5. It disproves that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun

There have been other stories of mass shootings where someone had a gun and was afraid to confront the shooter for fear that the cops would shoot them.

In this situation, the good guy (Hurley) with a gun literally did stop the bad guy (Troyke) with a gun.

7. He literally did stop the bad guy. The article states as much

What could have been another mass shooting was cut short due to his actions. How many would an AR-armed man have gunned down before police arrived?

Unfortunately, he gave his life to do so.

10. The purpose of training is so one doesn't have to try and think in a high stress situation

My guess is the guy spent some time on the range putting rounds on target but had little to no training and practice on what to do after a shooting. To the best of my knowledge, all self defense experts say not to have a gun in your hand after a shooting and the threat is neutralized.

but that is also assuming the threat is gone. He might of thought he was still a threat and wanted to get the weapon away from him as fast as he could. Just cause someone is down, doesnt mean the threat is gone. Plenty of times in police videos and interactions you have the individuals refusing to drop what they have while on the ground (despite still being alive and moving) or still have a weapon hidden on them.

16. Closing the distance with a perp, downed or not, is a bad move.

You either maintain, or better yet, increase the distance.

Your comment:

"Plenty of times in police videos and interactions you have the individuals refusing to drop what they have while on the ground (despite still being alive and moving) or still have a weapon hidden on them."

Which the the job of LEO to do so.

Theres over 20million concealed weapon holders in the country. 21 (almost 22) states have concealed carry WITHOUT a license. Open carry is legal in most of the country with a weapon ownership rate of 40-50%. Guns are normal in the US and shouldnt be a death sentence if someone openly has one. This is NOT the way things used to be nor police training. What ever happened to STOP!, Drop The Weapon!, FREEZE!? ESPECIALLY if they wernt pointing the weapon at anyone (im assuming).

then the officer shouldn't have shot him. Criminal charges should ensue.

More details are needed.
