.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade left many people slack-jawed when he claimed on Fox & Friends Monday that he read Adolf Hitlers notorious manifesto Mein Kampf as part of his high school curriculum.
He was apparently trying to keep up with Gen. Mark Milley, who said during congressional testimony last week that he believed members of the armed forces should be open minded, widely read and educated about issues, including critical race theory.
Ive read Mao Tse-tung. Ive read Karl Marx. Ive read Lenin. That doesnt make me a communist, explained Milley, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What is wrong with understanding?
Kilmeade said he thought Miley totally missed the point.
He said, Oh, I read Mao, I read Stalin. That has nothing to do with it, Kilmeade insisted.
We read Mein Kampf in school. No one thought we were Nazis, said Kilmeade. That is part of the curriculum. You find out about other things and other insurgencies. We get it. That has nothing to do with critical race theory.
Critics on Twitter werent buying Kilmeades story about reading Hitlers notorious anti-Semitic, world-domination screed as part of any public high school curriculum in America. Even guest Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) seemed to suppress a smile when Kilmeade made the outlandish claim.

Probably the first truthful thing that he'd said in a while, but I think he's confusing school with his home life.
No Doubt -- 100% he read it though. Probably placed a copy on his night table like TFG.

(9,961 posts)..."Mein Kampf" in high school. There was an addendum list. The world history book was the only "required" reading. Plus, I think we had to select books for book reports. We did discuss Hitler's book in class, but it was not required. The school library had the supplemental books. It was a bore, so I did skim through some of it... he was a dull writer. I don't think anyone did their book report on Hitler's book. We did have to report to the class.

(11,742 posts)You are being too hard on Kilmeade! I mean we all read the Turner Diaries in 8th grade right? Right? ... Guys?
I have not problem with discussing and reading Mein Kampf critically as an understanding of the mind of a man who lead one of the worst genocides in history. As a method of learning about his plan to use lies and how that correlates with other authoritarians in history. However, no, just no, people did not read Mein Kampf as literature or history in grade school or high school.
Milley was talking about reading books by Communist leaders at University, so as to understand opposing philosophies to those favored by the United States. As per usual, Fox lies to push their soft headed viewers toward a particular position.

(14,982 posts)Where would he have even gotten a copy? Assuming his high school years were pre-Amazon... I don't recall Barnes&Noble or my local independent bookstore stocking it at all, and definitely not in the area they put books from the local schools' booklists. Maybe there was more demand for it in his neighborhood...

(12,665 posts)Dad was a History teacher at the High School/Jr. College level. While he had two copies of Mao's Little Red Book (both in Mandarin and English), he didn't have a copy of Mien Kampf as , in his words " It's 10th grader angst drivel". He preferred to present excerpts for his Jr. College students to use.
He had the same opinion of Ayn Rand. Small excerpts only.
