UArizona doctor advises everyone wear face masks due to Delta variant

PHOENIX — A University of Arizona doctor on Monday recommended everyone, including those fully vaccinated, wear a mask amid a growing concern over the COVID-19 Delta variant.

Dr. Shad Marvasti, director of the College of Medicine, told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Gaydos and Chad Show despite the protections provided by coronavirus vaccines, he believes it’s “premature” to stop wearing masks.

“The danger is because of the fact that this Delta variant is about 60% more infectious than the last variant,” Marvasti said.

“It’s still a great idea to get vaccinated, in fact, that’s probably the best protection you have,” Marvasti said. “But outside of that, masks are very useful.”

14. So let me run some numbers by you.

Let's say (just to grab a starting number out of the air) that regular old COVID would infect 1 person out of every 100 unvaccinated people under a fixed set of circumstances.


If there are 3,000,000 people, that's 30,000 unvacinated people infected. Because mRNA vaccines are aobut 95% effective, In an equivalent vaccinated population there would be would be 5% of 30,000 = 1500 breakthrough cases.

Along comes Delta - which is 60% more contagious - meaning it would infect 1.6 persons out of every 100 unvaccinated people - that's 48,000 unvaccinated people infected. the mRNA vaccines are estimated at 88% effectivness - still pretty good, but now instead of 5% breakthrough caes - there are 12% of the already higher number will come down wiht it - 48,000 x .12 = 5,760 breakthrough cases

So under Delta, those 1500 breakthrough cases become 5,760 breakthrough cases becaue (1) Delta is more contagious AND (2) the vaccine is less effective - a 384% increase in breakthrough cases

That's assuming we're using an mRNA vaccine. It's even worse for the J&J - since its effectiveness was even lower to start with.
