Counting 20+ quakes in the last half hour. The biggest is 5.9 so far. And this is 40 minutes after a 4.8 hit a bit east of the Bay Area.
California seems bored today.

(36,498 posts)The Hayward Fault is mostly a relentless creeper and doesn't pack the power of the San Andreas Fault fault, but when it lets loose in the East Bay, the economical damage will be off the charts.

(13,367 posts)I remember after the Loma Prieta I lookied up some stuff on both faults and years of significant movement. They used to have a "pattern" up till about 40 yrs ago...

(3,405 posts)It is potentially one of the biggest volcano's ever in history.
And yes, if it goes, there is general agreement amongst the scientists it could kill most of us, or all of us.

(12,692 posts)It's been a while since I studied geology, but this seems more like the Melones fault zone that goes up along the backside of the North American plate to help form the Sierra Nevada range.
There's some volcanic activity potential involved in that area too.
Just what we need....

(1,792 posts)I felt two small movements. I thought maybe it was a train going by but couldn't hear any train. Then I thought my heart was having an attack. Ten minutes later I heard it was a quake.

(13,367 posts)but I guess after living thru the 89 quake in the BAy I'm not feeling anything below a 5... LOL
I keep watching the hanging lamp to see if there's movement. I was driving during the bigger one but my son said the stuff on the counters was dancing a bit!
I'll keep you posted!

(2,577 posts)4 distinct shakes close together, but distinct. I have experienced a lot of CA quakes. The 89 Quake was different because it went on for so long. When I lived in San Jose area, sometimes the quake would come with a rumble or bang like sound and be a jolt, sometimes with smaller jolts afterwards.
