MEMPHIS, Tenn. A major employer in Memphis is requiring its employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Wednesday, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital announced that all St. Jude and Memphis-area ALSAC employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Thursday, September 9.
In a statement to Local 24 News, St. Jude said, As our mission states and as our St. Jude core values echo, we must ensure that advancing treatment for children with catastrophic diseases is at the center of everything we do. This means providing our patients and their families with the safest treatment environment possible.
More at link. Glad to see this & I hope it becomes a trend in TN & nationwide!

(11,100 posts)As to court challenges, I am skeptical.
St. Jude is a private charitable institution. It is not a "state actor."
St. Jude is a research hospital. Medical science is important to them. There are a lot of really sick, immunocompromised children in St. Jude. It cannot tolerate a later day Typhoid Mary walking the halls.
Moreover, Tennessee is an "employment at will" state. The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development website states:
"Employers may legally terminate an employee at any time for any reason, or for no reason without incurring legal liability. However, an employer may not discriminate against any employee on the basis of the employee's race, sex, age, religion, color, national origin, or disability. Likewise, an employee is free to leave a job at any time for any or no reason with no adverse legal consequences."
I see no basis for a court challenge. Of course, that doesn't mean there won't be one. I would advise any lawyers contemplating such a law suit to review Rule 11 of the Tennessee Rules of Civil Procedure.

(153,169 posts)when I bought a TV at Best Buy, they asked if I'd like to make a $5 donation to St. Jude.....sure I said
later out of curiosity I googled to find out how much money they raised - and it's a lot - St Jude is a very worthwhile charity indeed

(7,702 posts)We are talking about immune compromised children.
The time it took for this to be implemented at St. Jude, is emblematic of the failure of our so-called "healthcare system", once again.

(205,535 posts)And anyone who's hospitalized is there for a reason - I agree that this should become a national mandate!
My friend who's a cancer survivor told me that a woman who had worked at a local cancer treatment center for years was let go because she refused to vaccinate. Obviously, anyone being treated there is especially vulnerable as well, I can't see how they'd allow anyone around patients who isn't vaccinated and could spread the virus!
