"The hell with the vaccine, I'd love to give the hospital all my savings."

Sitting with 5 reich wingers at the VFW last night, the 3 unvaccinated ones started talking about all the
good reasons not to get the vaccine when I said "The hell with the vaccine, I'd love to give the hospital
all my savings." Got the deer in the headlights look from them so I assume they had something new
to think about. Three of us with both shots just looked at the three w/o in silence for a little bit and
then someone changed the subject. Try this on anti-vaxers and add this question " How many months of
hospitalization can your savings account afford"? Wish I had thought of that one last night also.

But it's likely most of those guys are on Medicare or VA and probably wouldn't have to pay much or anything at all.

cover a serious illness either. Gone through life moaning and complaining about everything, never holding onto a job long term, pay very little into Social Security and such, thus, will get very little in benefits. It does come back to bite them.

Being retired can be very challenging.

We are doing OK. Not exactly fat and sassy, but we can cover our basic expenses. Not everyone can.

with only one having a decent paying job. Anyone can get a VFW membership card by paying
yearly dues, was about $10 a year back when I got a lifetime membership. I'm a veteran.

Those co-pays and "balance due" bills from the hospital can get pretty steep.

I read that one person who recovered from Covid racked up a million dollar hospital bill!

or a community gathering center with good food and drinks at reasonable prices. My experience after
visiting quite a few VFW locations throughout the midwest is that I see few people under the age
of 30 and everyone is willing to be friendly. Some have a lot of card or domino players, some have
pinball machines and pool tables, all sell lottery tickets. Basically a bar with an older crowd. Don't
know the policy at all locations, but my local one is if you cause a disturbance you get barred for life.
A bar that doesn't tolerate rowdiness. Most non-vets who join usually have relatives who served.

I never joined here and I'm actually a vet. I was concerned it would be full of Trumpers. Perhaps I should have checked it out, now I can barely walk so probably too late for me.

If a town has a 50/50 make up of Ds and Rs, then only half of their members at a VFW will be deplorable idiots.
Sorry about your walking situation, I'm right behind you developing the same problem.

I live in Greenville NC. East Carolina University. Eastern NC, home of the "send them back" chanting nazis. Eastern NC's general community is full of redhats. But the university community, which includes a regional medical center, vote for Dems. The line seems to be prominently drawn between educated and uneducated here. So, Trump has lots of rallies in Greenville, as the POTUS elections within Greenville tend to be close. It is not close in the down ballot elections. Our congressman, Greg Murphy, a Trumper, won our district in a blowout.

So I imagine that VFW's here could be probably expected to be mostly redhats, as I doubt the university community would be going there to mingle with the stupid (Trumpers).

I never had the "privilege" of serving in a conflict zone. I thought VFW required service in a war zone.

My American Legion hall is a good source for cheap but ok burgers and cheap cold beer. And for hearing right-wing opinions on everything. I can take that place if I limit my visits to a few times a year.

they dropped that requirement a long time ago. Anybody can buy what I believe is called an associate membership
for $10 which really means "I support the troops but never served" In fact my local VFW only checks for
membership once a year on their customer appreciation day when all drinks and food are free. Rest of year
if you walk in thirsty or hungry and have money in your pocket you're welcome to come in and spend it.
Don't know if they're still doing it but they used to give away free lifetime memberships to children who's
parent served in WWII.
