(16,903 posts)We went there with a small group of folks bringing in medical supplies, etc., at the time it was the only way Cuba accepted foreigners to visit.
These people are suffering.. Only one child per family, no hope of ever getting off the island, etc. It was very depressing. When we left, my husband left his entire suitcase behind, our bus driver had two teenage sons who didn't have much to wear, etc.
Cuba is BEAUTIFUL, but you would not want to live there. There are spies everywhere.. We were followed all the time.

(99,710 posts)In college I was the only non-Cuban in a Cuban study group. Cubans have a reputation as right wingers, not the ones I know. Batista was bad, your average Cuban wanted him gone and thought Fidel Castro was well intentioned. But his intentions turned out not to be good.

(15,325 posts)(CNN)Anti-government activists in Cuba say that more than 100 people have been arrested or are missing on the island following widespread protests on Sunday.
One person died during clashes with police on Monday, Cuba's Ministry of Interior said Tuesday, according to state-run Radio Rebelde.
The Movimiento San Isidro, which advocates for greater artistic expression in Cuba, published a list of activists that it said were believed to have been detained by authorities.
Among the detainees is journalist Camila Acosta, according to Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, who called for her release.
The Interior Ministry said the man who died and other protesters had attacked officials.
On Sunday, CNN journalists witnessed multiple people being forcibly arrested and thrown in the back of vans at protests in Havana.

(99,710 posts)His failings paved the way for Castro. That being said the lion's share of Cubans were born long after the Revolution. They are the ones protesting.

(435 posts)The former owners of Cuba land will take back the property and evict the Cubans from their homes. The corporations will take over the commercial property and the Cubans can starve for all they care. Don't kid yourself that the capitalists care about the Cuban people.
