Just talked to a friend who Ive been close with for 25 years. Love his kids like were mine. Was there when they were born. Not in the room, of course. That would be creepy. But at the hospital. Took their dad out for a drink right after mom and the kid went to sleep.
They are republicans but less crazy than most. Wrote in a name rather than voting for trump in 16. Pulled the lever for Biden last year but republican down tickets. His wife is less moderate. Not religious.
Anyway he is the only one out of 5 in his household vaccinated. Its him, his wife and kids.
4 of them now have Covid. Guess who doesnt? Bingo. The vaccinated guy.
His kids are pretty much over it as expected for very healthy and active kids in their teens.
His wife? Not so much. Sick bad for over a week. No breathing problems yet, but Im worried. Its not getting better. Shes around 50.
He is pissed. As am I. So preventable.
Im vaccinated. I still wear a mask if the place Im going into is crowded. If I get Covid and die, well, I did all I could do. That life. Something is going to get us. But people dying and getting real sick when it is totally preventable is sickening.
Damn Im pissed. Even in my conservative family in Louisiana everyone is vaccinated. Why could he not convince his immediate family to get the jab?
Ok. Rant over. But Ive been worried about this happening for months now. It was predictable.

(26,932 posts)almost anything. Even if you're vaccinated.
I am also vaccinated. I'm still wearing a mask everywhere, but I'll be honest and tell you it has more to do with recent dental surgery, tooth extractions, and dentures. I'm not really fit to be seen in public yet. Honestly, I'm very grateful for the pandemic that allows me to wear a mask. I also have the good fortune to live in northern New Mexico, and lots of people here are still masking. I'm pretty sure that many of them are fully vaccinated, as I am, but for whatever reasons still choose to mask.
I will NOT question someone who continues to mask. People have very different reasons for masking, and who am I to question or judge?

Great job, Mods! Much appreciated.

(27,179 posts)Something along the lines of "cewl story is cewl."
I'm guessing someone who thinks Covid is fake? And all the sick, dying, and medical workers are really "crisis actors".
I see a surprisingly large number of them in the YouTube comments.
Totally delusional.
Hope you're friends get better.

(11,949 posts)But his wife is someone I care about as well. And the kids are pretty much over it. Being under 20 is so fun. I remember those days and wish I had appreciated how bullet proof I was. Had 4 badly broken ribs heal in 4 weeks or so. Caused, of courses, by crazy stuff kids that age do!
Im worried about her. She is a great mother to those kids. And a fun and funny person. She may be a republican but she does not shy from self deprecating humor. To me that is a big deal. I generally dont like people who cant laugh at themselves. And she is not a religious nut.
Lord knows Im often a big dumbass. If I could not laugh at myself I would be missing out on most of the humor in my life!

(19,373 posts)when we're all going to know someone who's had COVID, or worse yet, died from it.
Delta is spreading faster than the wildfires out west, and gamma is in the wings. Who knows what'll come after that.

(11,949 posts)My wife were careful until vaccinated. 2 months ago I ditched the masks, as did the wife. Because at that time the evidence I read made me feel safe.
But as the Delta variant has come on we are no longer that confident. We arent afraid of dying like 6 months ago, but dont want this shit at all. So broke out the masks again. Not everywhere like last year. But where there are lots of people.

(19,373 posts)I was associated with at my old place of business, die from the virus. One was a few years younger than myself, and the other was probably 25-30 years younger. I hadn't seen either since I retired in 2001, but they were both pleasant gentlemen, although both were republicans. Being a republican meant something quite different 20 years ago.

(10,414 posts)We are not even leaving the house even with a mask at this point. Delta got my vaccinated cousin sick. We can very well get it

(46,805 posts)One got it early one before vaccines were available. The other got just before vaccines were being rolled out. Some got it after vaccines were rolled out, but they were not vaccinated at the time yet. Thankfully none died from it.

(31,204 posts)Caught it from an un-vaccinated in-law.
She's gonna be fine, but she works with developmental delayed children. Fortunately, her case load right now in is only four or the number of patients she saw the week she was diagnosed was only four. She has been in touch with the families. We just hope there is no transmission to those innocent kids. My daughter wore her mask at work. She probably is glad that her work continued mask mandate. My daughter hasn't been super-cautious. The only place she has been wearing mask has been work.
Heck the only place I've worn a mask in the past month was my airline flight and maybe somewhere else....but that's about it....I'm gonna get in the habit of wearing it more. No loud bars for me..LOL...

(10,451 posts)That unvaccinated wife should ask about this possible treatment. Or a steroid type drug that has been shown to offer some help in recovery.
Should be easier to get the wife and kids (if 12 and older) vaxxed now.
I'm sorry people don't recognize that they really do need to get vaccinated. For my wife it was the fact that she works in the lab at a hospital and she was seeing what was going on. A mothballed floor of her hospital was reopened for Covid patients. A former "women's hospital" was repurposed as a Covid hospital. Refrigerated trucks were brought in to store the bodies. That the initial testing wasn't there and initially all tests had to be sent to the state lab for testing until the commercial labs (Labcorp, Quest) got testing available and then finally a way to test in the hospital lab. After the winter surge the hospital group was ready to close the Covid hospital down but the surge is here in NC too. And yet we have one aunt of my wife who won't get vaccinated as she doesn't trust the government yet she works for the same hospital group as my wife (though in food services). Her husband (who has had a triple heart bypass) however was not hesitant and got the vaccine, as have the rest of my wife's immediate and one-step removed family. All my immediate UK family have been vaccinated (save the kids, who are under 12). My eldest son got the shot as soon as he could, as did I. My youngest son is expecting to get his shot on his 12th birthday (yeah, what a present but still...)
The hospital group is now going to mandate vaccination or termination. This may pressure my wife's aunt to take the shot though she has mentioned she wants to retire next year.
Here's hoping that wife recovers.

(14,224 posts)With all due respect, you should avoid such an attitude. There ARE things you can do to prevent it and you should do them. Wear a mask whenever you're in any public space, especially if it's indoors. Not just "if the place Im going into is crowded." Avoid going anywhere. It's not worth it. blah blah blah. You know the routine. Don't just throw up your hands and give in.

I got the vaccine and believe in science.

(11,949 posts)We still mask in crowded places and generally avoid them all together. But did that before Covid. Dont love crowds.
But we also realize the vaccine provides almost 100% prevention of going to the hospitals or dying. Especially since we dont have co-morbidities. I was obese when Covid hit. Ive lost over 35 lbs since then. It motivated me to get in shape.
We truly have a divide society. Those safe with the vaccine and those who have chosen to keep dying.
I feel so bad for those who would like to be vaccinated but cant for medical reasons. They are watching their unvaccinated neighbors potentially killing them.

(11,934 posts)I did, after prolonged contact with a friend who was only partly vaccinated. I'm hoping today is the worst of it, the congestion in my head is really painful.
I hope he doesn't catch it. I'd convinced my friend to get vaccinated and thank heavens for that. He's mostly on the mend. I should be fine in a couple days.

(3,669 posts)as soon as it was available. I started going back to the office a few days a week last month and I know many people are not vaccinated. This virus would be a death sentence for my better half who requires 4L of oxygen just to function normally. I'm so tired of being afraid for him while seeing others refuse to take care of themselves. Hope your friend recovers fully and will then tell others to get the shot.
