Major South Florida hospital reporting 526 people with #COVID19 today. Source there tells me they expect that number to hit the 800s any day now. They topped out at 650 last summer. 99% unvaccinated & majority under 50. This is all on

(11,949 posts)Covid is all anyone in Florida is talking about. In my area even without mandated most are masking back up and Im not in a blue area.
DeSantis is in a bad spot. I know at least 5 republicans who have or recently had Covid. One in the ICU for over 5 days. A good friend was the only in his house vaccinated. His entire household except him got it and his wife was real sick for 6 days. Still not fully recovered. He is a non religious republican. Somewhat moderate did not vote for trump but Republican down ticket. He is really pissed at all the republicans including the governor.
The Governor either back tracks and pisses off the crazy base or doubles down and makes everyone else mad. I think at this point he has to double down and hope people forget this by next November.
But right now with the right candidate he could be beat. If for no other reason that his voters are dying off like crazy.
Florida is not Alabama or Mississippi.
Im not predicting he will lose next year. It will be tough. But people are not happy at all now.

(9,998 posts)I have no faith in the vast majority of Floridians to do the right thing.
The fact he can be so fucking oblivious to the death all around him, and yet, like you said, "it will be tough," shows how pathetic things are there.

(11,949 posts)Neither are great candidates in my opinion but Fried is the first state government Democratic candidate to win in almost 20 years. Shes our Agriculture secretary.
Plus Val Demings is running against Rubio. We will have good African American turnout. She is a great Democrat and good candidate. She can win. The trump base hates Rubio.
Dont give up on Florida forever. Our problem is the hundreds of thousands of Midwestern upper middle class white folks who retire here every year. Youd have to see their massive developments to believe it. They replace our dying off old white republicans. And they are 80% conservative.

Should we give up?

(3,763 posts)guess is the Democratic nominee will need at least a 5 point lead to win.
Give up? No! Choose a nominee that can actually win? Yes!

(36,137 posts)appreciate being reminded about what suffering Floridians and their children have endured, and should vote accordingly.
It's not unheard of for Floridians to vote in Democratic governors.

(19,204 posts)In so many ways, except the weather. New York doesn't have hurricanes though, so there's that.
DeSatan is just another lying, loud-mouthed republican piece of shit.

(63,221 posts)season is over? The last thing Florida needs right now is a natural disaster on top of their Covid epidemic.

(6,139 posts)Even republican parents have to take care of their kids first. Never once throughout this pandemic were there so many hospitalized children, and they cant get vaccinated.

(26,142 posts)Newborns and infants are getting it.
That is the difference, and school is starting next week. His stance will not play well when ten or 20 kids a day die, when week-old babies die.
