Hutchinson told them that he's not asking them to trust government, but they should do their own research.

Doing their own research is what has lead these people not to get vaccinated, because they can't tell a reputable source from a quack! They do need to trust the CDC. Sometimes the government is looking out for the public's best interest.

Of course, Republicans don't like to say that shit because it doesn't jibe with their doctrine that government is evil and can't do anything right. So people look to the private sector, which has various personal interests that aren't aligned with the public health. It's the distrust in our institutions that's the problem here, and Hutchinson still doesn't get it!

But his only response is a smidgen of ass-covering that he can blow up into "Well, I warned you all back in August! Here's my official statement from that time. You can't possibly hold me responsible for people not acting in their own best interests." Sadly, this limp argument will persuade some people that good old Asa had their back. Whether it continues to be a majority has yet to be seen.
