Ex-Official: Trump Knew Afghan Army Would Surrender, Made Deal Anyway
Former Natl. Sec. Dir. John Ratcliffe said that Trump knew that the Afghan military would fall to the Taliban within 48 hours but negotiated a deal to pull U.S. troops out of the country anyway.

Former National Security Director John Ratcliffe on Thursday revealed that former President Donald Trump knew that the Afghan military would fall to the Taliban within 48 hours but negotiated a deal to pull U.S. troops out of the country anyway.
Ratcliffe made the remarks during an appearance on Fox News.
"And I remember President Trump saying, 'I don't think they'll last two days,'" he added. "And that's why those conditions that [Fox News host Bill Hemmer] mentioned are so important."
Under the original conditions that the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban, U.S. forces would have withdrawn from Afghanistan in May. President Joe Biden extended that exit until August.

(9,986 posts)I would have expected some better assessments from Bidens team after they had a chance to talk to people on the ground in Afghanistan and in US intelligence. But after hearing a few interviews of H.R. McMaster, my confidence in military judgment has been reduced significantly.

(3,626 posts)...for the same reason TFG did. It's kind of obvious when you look at the whole situation with clear eyes, and Biden wanted to get us out when he was Obama's VP. It's a nasty situation but there comes a time when you have to stop throwing good money after bad. The only realistic alternative is to declare the whole place a US territory and plan on being there forever.

(4,981 posts)How can it be his claims are in such stark contrast to Joint Chiefs Milleys from a few days ago? He spoke of how estimated weeks to total collapse turned into days.
SIV processing slowed dramatically under Trump - he never intended to get allies out. Is my suspicion that one way or another, he was always going to totally abandon them as just more suckers and losers.
Was this situation always teed-up as an eventual talking point? What was the real deal they didnt share?
Lots of questions remain as our troops are getting as many out as possible. Every report of more citizens, allies, and vulnerable people evacuated out of there is a success under the circumstances President Biden was handed.
