Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCould someone tell me a couple things:
An uniformed but listening friend is equating Iran an Afghanistan with Iran in regards to sanctions and more importantly, US in regards to the particular lifting of sanctions.
Explaining that is a complicated issue and one cant equate one country to another.
But is there any brief summary of each country might help.
Thanks for any help. Im not a geopolitical wonk for sure and dont want to spout out stuff I know nothing about.

(3,294 posts)Things have to settle in Afghanistan after we're gone.
Things can shift a lot. Who would have thought in 1975 that Vietnam-- controlled anew by the "Communists"- would end up in 2021 as a business powerhouse? Surprise-- Ho Chi Minh wanted independence for the country more than communism.
Much turmoil and torment in between, but things really did change in a few decades.
Our sanctions during that time might or might not have had an influence.
Anyway, no wisdom, but it's very hard to tell at this point what is going to happen to the country. We will have less influence no matter what we decide.
