Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi Is the Hero Democrats Need
DELIVERING THE GOODS
This week, she gave reason to hope that this Congress and this president are capable of advancing an agenda that would actually benefit people most in need.

Thank goodness for Nancy Pelosi.

The budget resolution that House Democrats are advancing includes up to $3.5 trillion to reinforce the social safety net and address soft infrastructure priorities, like establishing a federal paid family leave program, addressing climate concerns, and making childcare more affordable, all of which are just asif not moreimportant for enabling people to get to work as tunnels and trains. Pelosi and progressive Democrats had insisted that they would not pass the Senates infrastructure bill unless the Senate advanced the Houses budget resolution. But a group of nine moderate Democrats threatened to blow all that up by insisting the House vote on the infrastructure bill first, or they would kill the budget resolution. (No Labels pretty much called them heroes!)
In the end, the moderates were out-maneuvered by Pelosi, who got her caucus in line and advanced the resolution in exchange for a pinky-promise that she would get the infrastructure bill passed by Sept. 27. Progressives in the House like Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington spoke optimistically about writing a budget bill that includes top progressive priorities in the coming weeks, and the Democrats who threatened to blow up the entire delicate negotiation process now look a lot like people who fucked around, and found out.
None of this would have been possible and this legislative moonshot wouldnt be in reach if Nancy Pelosi hadnt committed one of the most impressive legislative feats in recent memory, at 80 years old and in a news week dominated by high-profile foreign policy blunders and finger-pointing. She did it wearing heels that I wouldnt dare wear as a woman in her thirties, and on a diet consisting of disturbing amounts of chocolate.
At this point, I would traditionally insert the obligatory cover-my-ass paragraph about how I dont always agree with Pelosi on everything, and how, as a voter much more aligned with Bernie Sanders than Dianne Feinstein, shes disappointed me in the past. But why does every discussion of Pelosi need to include a litany of gripes from more left-leaning voters? Im not fangirling her. I know shes not perfect. But shes getting the job done here.

(21,323 posts)and believe she is the best Speaker we have ever had. No former Speaker had to put up with the obstruction that she has been dealt.
I wish she could trade places with Chuck Schumer for 2 months, I am confident things would get done.

(10,168 posts)I'm a 72 y/o liberal and she is historic, make no mistake!
*And President Biden will go down in history as another FDR or LBJ, maybe even more important! But I digress, sort of.

(46,039 posts)He's definitely in the same class as FDR and LBJ. He's the president I've been waiting for for 40 years.

(43,146 posts)She has a lifetime of knowledge and surely has great advisors. She is a constant reminder that the country was founded for the people, the voters, that is the source of political power. She has influenced world affairs, public opinion for and against the Senate, she has held GOP Senators up for scorn, she is using not just her enumerated powers as Speaker, but all those implied powers whereever they may lead. She is following rules of the House long forgotten - she appointed a committee of her own choosing - where have you heard that done in our lifetimes? If she manages to save democracy and the State, she will be the greatest Speaker ever. No one has wielded power in as broad a sense, all the while reminding us of the purpose of the State, of democracy, of power, of government. She is incumbent didactic, a totally new way of governing, and she does so modestly, always mindful to protect her flank from GOP snipe attempts.

(58,785 posts)As one of 250,000,000 in the electorate, that's about as "perfect" as I'd ever ask, and I'm so grateful we have her.
As for the failure to ever accomplish anything of the delusional saboteurs from the farther left? How could failure be anything but inevitable in people incapable of understanding (admitting?) that she's what they claim to be. The real thing in the real world.

(15,601 posts)The only griping Ive been hearing is from the fossil-fuel supported centrists of the Sabotage Squad, who claim they have to be moderate due to the purpleness of their districts, but most of whom are actually in very safe, D+7-17% seats
So, yes, for infrastructure specifically, Pelosi is indeed the hero we need.
