New York Times: The Florida story is a cautionary tale for dealing with the current incarnation of the coronavirus. The United States has used the vaccines as its primary pandemic weapon. But Florida shows that even a state that made a major push for vaccinations Florida ranks 21st among states and Washington, D.C., in giving people of all ages at least one shot can be crushed by the Delta variant, reaching frightening levels of hospitalizations and deaths.
Floridas pandemic data, more scant since the state ended its declared Covid-19 state of emergency in June, reveals only limited information about who is dying. Hospitals have said upward of 90 percent of their patients have been unvaccinated. Exactly why the state has been so hard-hit remains an elusive question. Other states with comparable vaccine coverage have a small fraction of Floridas hospitalization rate. The best explanation of what has happened is that Floridas vaccination rates were good, but not good enough for its demographics.

(17,009 posts)Theres little to no mask wearing. Im in a county with a vaccination rate of 37%. So there may be some areas with higher rates but they are the exception not the rule.t

(58,785 posts)The more so for the view from a part of Florida that's a favorite target. Overall vax rates in the county where we've been wintering have reportedly finally risen all the way to 51% with at least one dose, likely closer to Jimfields' for both as it has many lower income residents.
It's worth noting that although 91% of all Americans over 65 are vaccinated, even in Florida only 20% are in that age group.

(5,232 posts)resident bashing! Those of us who live here and love it are growing in numbers. Were going to vote and try and change the political climate. Try and bash Arizona, South Dakota,, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, etc. etc.

(9,457 posts)Our governor sucks! He's willing to use our kids as political sacrificial lambs. Overall we as a state voted for President Biden but make no mistake, we have a long way to go. Frankly I don't know why Arizona isn't getting bashed more over our governor's policies not only on COVID but on basically everything including that disgusting recount by the cyber ninjas. What a frickin' joke! Thank goodness our governor is not eligible to run again.

(1,167 posts)And don't forget that he ended the extra $300 in unemployment from the feds a couple of months ago, money that wasn't costing the state a cent. Why'd he do it? Because he's an asshole and didn't want to be upstaged by other conservative governors, I suppose. For the record, Arizona is 50th out of 51 states and DC in the amount of state unemployment compensation it pays, at a whopping $240 per week (only Mississippi is lower).
Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be completely rid of Ducey just because he can't run for governor again. I fully expect him to run for the senate against Kelly. (May he lose in such a resounding defeat that he leaves politics forever and goes back to ice cream making!)
