Antiabortion groups in Texas say they’re already following up on tip-offs from members of the public who are reporting those who are pregnant for possible violations of the extreme abortion ban brought in this week. The Washington Post reported that Texas Right to Life, one of the antiabortion groups that helped to pass the radical law, has set up a site where people can anonymously snitch on anyone who is potentially violating the ban. Legislative director of the group, John Seago, said tips had already started to come in, but none have been received that suggest clinics are continuing to carry out illegal abortions. “As far as we can tell, everyone is complying with the law on the industry side, so there is no aiding and abetting happening,” said Seago. Anyone in Texas now has the right to sue individuals involved with providing or facilitating an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy—before many even know they’re pregnant.

It seems like the law will be put on hold the first time that there’s actually an attempt to enforce it… yet “ everyone is complying with the law on the industry side” - which gives them what they want.

That ultimately does this law in. Texas has been careful to not make violating the 6 week ban criminal. But they are flying fast and loose with ideas of standing. And potentially with the idea of any plaintiff being exempt from a countersuit. I suspect the argument will be that these provisions grant special privilege to plaintiffs which essentially make them agents of the state.

Just my thought. I'm not a lawyer. Just a guesser (and I'm often wrong, which makes it more fun!)

Another point, it is not just men.

There are plenty of women who are all for this law and more. They are angry women who are Christians and were, A. either forced to have 6 babies by some dominant asshat for the 'jesus' or, B. But, if anyone helps her leave the state, they are subject to the bounty. Which begs the question: Will American Airlines (based in Ft. Worth), Southwest (based in Dallas), Delta, United, and any other airline that flies in and out of that state, who flies one of these women to a safe state be held liable, as well? Those companies are wealthy and have teams of lawyers. A single person normally does not have access to such resources and therefore any attorney would just wait until the defendant realizes that he/she/they cannot afford to battle a big attorney/firm and so they will be sued and lose everything over it. The legal system was already unfair when it comes to big corporations vs. people and this will just add to that bias.

because I'd like to know exactly how they are calculating that. If memory serves they count from the first day of the last period- which, no that is not when a fertilization most likely occurs and if that's the case they're padding it by roughly 2 weeks in most cases.

23. I once worked with Texas Right To Life...

...when they were trying to overturn the "Texas Futile Care Law," AKA Advance Directives Law, which allow a hospital ethics committee to withhold life-saving measures from a patient against the patient's will and their family's will. My sister was very nearly a victim of the law, with the hospital threatening to "pull the plug" on her life. Without the help of many people in the community, several Right to Life attorneys, TRTL, my sister would have succumbed to the law.

The director of TRTL called me to testify once again before the end of this past session. Although I was grateful to their efforts for saving patients from the ethics committees' "noose", my anger at what the Republican Party has become made me refuse. I am so very grateful I didn't have anything more to do with them. How any Republican can still claim to be "Pro Life" after what the world has witnessed from them the last couple years demonstrates the massive hypocrites they've become. They've always been inconsistent in their "Pro" life claims, but after Trump and Covid, they're just liars. So glad I didn't help them this year.

44. If I were the CEO of an airline, I would now demand that all women in Texas show proof

of not being pregnant before getting on one of my planes. I would phrase it as "We don't want to aid and abet a woman who might be using our airline as a vehicle to take her somewhere to get an abortion, and thus violate Texas law."

And if I were the CEO of a car rental company, I would require proof of not being pregnant to rent. If I were a car seller, a gasoline station, a bike seller or rental place, or, hell, a shoe salesman, I would do the same.
