'Stay in your hood': White 'Karen' fired after allegedly assaulting Black couple at Brooklyn dog

park

"At the dog park in Brooklyn with my fiancé and this white woman was threatening to call police and told us to 'stay in our hood' because she had our dog confused with another dog who had been barking loudly," Joseph wrote above the video on Twitter. "So, I started recording and she tried to slap the phone out my hand."

The video shows the woman giving Joseph the middle finger and swiping at his phone.

"Stay in our hood? You just told us to leave the dog park and stay in our hood?" Joseph asks the woman in the video.

-----

"I hope Emma learns from this," he added. "I hope that other people learn from this who engage in abusive, racist and destructive behavior, because ultimately, whether Emma lost her job or not, it doesn't take away the trauma that my fiancee and I have. It doesn't take away the feeling of feeling like anything racist can happen anywhere, so I don't think people should be coddled, and I do think that consequences are important, so hopefully this is a learning lesson for everybody."

When are such types going to realise that in the 21st Century acting out your white privileged racism, in diverse communities has consequences? Oh and the interwebs.

... manifesting terrible behaviors forever. We expected a change in the general tenor of behavior with women beginning to step into power. Maybe that change is women are finally free enough to make mistakes.

I remember when a PoC was hired as an Affirmative Action hire, if he/she screwed up it was almost a headline. But the fact is: one of our rights is to make a mistake.

It seems like the men are all so ridiculous it's impossible to take them seriously.

And the women are, too. But they embarrass me more. I expect better frim women.

Probably not rational.

It was an older woman with stringy gray hair. She looked mentally off. The things that she was saying were just awful. I can't imagine anyone would think it's ok to talk like that to anyone.

Depending on her former employer's policy, it could linger.
I know the company from which I retired had this policy:
They will only acknowledge somebody's prior employment & volunteer no information. However, if asked whether separation was voluntary or involuntary, they would answer that question.
If her company is similar, near future employment may be dependent upon whether that simple question gets asked.

... and instead claim to be engaging in independent study, or travel, or self-employed on Ebay.

I think the only time she'd need to be 100% honest about her employment history (under oath, or similar) would be if she were applying for a job that required a background check or security clearance.

But, honestly... she doesn't seem to be the type who would qualify.

But, stories like that raise eyebrows in HR offices.
A buddy of mine from my former company walked away from an engineering job to move south.
He was single and saved a ton of cash before the move so he didn't have to worry about expenses for a while.
But, after a year, a chemical engineer with Black Belt certification from ASQ was having a hard time getting a gig, because HR people couldn't grasp that he simply took a year off at 45 years old.
It took him another 7 months to land a gig. He had to borrow against his 401k for a bit.
So, the "backpacked through India", " independent study" stuff might be problematic.

Any HR worth its salt runs a potential employee's name through Google to see what comes up. This incident will trail after this woman for years, if not decades.

But, she could also legally change her name to thwart such low-level background checks. Either way, she's not likely to go very far.

"Punishing" people just makes it worse. We're in this push back cycle right now where everybody thinks that if they just bludgeon the other guy hard enough the other guy will magically start thinking "right." It doesn't work that way. Every one just gets angrier and more violent and feels justified in pushing back harder.

And the filmer Frederick Joseph is promoting his book The Black Friend that just came out two weeks ago.

But let us all jump to conclusions and secretly hope someone doesn't target us the same way, whether we actually do something or not.

I would be tempted to wear a bodycam that was on all the time. I am thinking about the hostess who was assaulted by three women who claim she made racist statements prior to the assault. I mean how can you defend yourself from such an accusation?

I haven't a clue what happened in this case but since three individuals including one apparently independent individual claimed that the statement was made, you have to conclude that it was made. Of course the conversation could have gone like this (I am not saying it did but here is an example). Lady: Please stop your dog from barking so loudly at other dogs, Man with Phone: I suppose you would prefer me to stay in the hood with my dog. Lady: Well if you dog barks like that and scares other dogs then perhaps you should stay in the hood.

And, sadly, there are just too damn many of these incidents experienced by too damn many recipients and witnessed by too damn many bystanders not to be believed or considered legitimate or taken seriously.

Unfortunately, our country at large is too damaged and wounded, and resentful and fearful of changing demographics to be as objective as the explanation being offered here.
