A North Carolina teacher resigned after word spread that she told Black students that without the Constitution, they would be her 'field slaves'
According to reporting from local NBC affiliate WITN-TV, the teacher asked Black students to raise their hands during a lesson about the Constitution. She then told the students who had their hands raised that if not for the Constitution, they would be her "field slaves."
WITN-TV saw a memo sent out to parents dated September 24 that admitted that there was a "racially insensitive lesson" that resulted in the teacher's resignation. In the note, Winterville Charter Academy Principal Annastasia Ryan wrote that "culturally sensitive training for the teacher that resigned will be provided, along with proactive training measures for our current and future staff members."
According to The Daily Beast, another memo from Ryan circulated on October 5, which said that a separate incident of racism by a student was being investigated.

Tillman also told the AP that she had heard of another instance of racism from Black parents on a private Facebook group they shared. According to Tillman, a group of Black girls at Winterville were attempting to explain how it is racist to call a person of color a monkey, when an unnamed teacher went up to them and said: "It's OK, You're all my little monkeys."
What the fuckery!!!!

(36,055 posts)Of course these teachers' certifications should be suspended until they show transcript proof of having earned grades in at least 3 courses in at any college curriculum that includes African American or Hispanic or any indigenous people's history, African American or world literature, Black psychology.

(15,793 posts)Dont do stupid scenarios or give your opinion on what may have been. Use district approved text book only and do not add anything further. If students ask questions, dodge and go onto another topic. Teachers fail when they bring their own thoughts into it. Have each students read a paragraph out loud during class. That takes up lots of time. We did that in school and saves time on discussion.

(31,388 posts)It doesn't say whether the teacher was certified. Charter schools in NC are allowed to hire non certified teachers.
They also aren't publicly accountable to elected school boards or transparent, even though they are publicly funded.

(36,055 posts)If NC allows non-certified teachers, it doesn't understand or care about professional standards.
The fact that people send their kids to schools that don't require standardized teacher education says a lot about how people cheap out on their kids, leaders cheap out on their states' kids, and neither believe that they get what they pay for.
Just my professional opinion as a veteran public high school teacher of 35 years.

(31,388 posts)should be stigmatized because of one inept teacher at a charter school. People need to know the differences between public schools and charter schools. They may both be funded publicly, but there are usually substantial differences between them.
I am a product of public schools in NJ, CA, and a public University (BS and MPH UCLA)
When we moved to NC in 2000, we specifically chose Chapel Hill because of their nationally recognized public schools for our two boys. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools continue to be at the top of school district rankings both in the state and nationally.
I have been doing a little bit of digging about this particular Charter school. It's in Pitt County--which voted for Biden about 9% ahead of Trump--yet the schools fall in about the middle of district rankings for the state according to NICHE rankings. https://www.niche.com/k12/winterville-charter-academy-winterville-nc/
The parent company of this Charter school does require teachers to be licensed in the state. Without knowing the name of the teacher, one isn't able to search for her party affiliation. She could be a Republican wanting to make a point about CRT which the Republican dominated legislature here recently tried to make illegal to teach when they passed HB 324, but was vetoed by our Democratic Governor Cooper. If you read the article, it was kind of a bizarre episode, which makes one wonder about her motivation.

Greenville--which is the big city closest to Winterville--was one of the orange a$$hole's favorite places to come for rallies in NC . He enjoyed stirring up his racist fans and apparently there have been some other episodes of racist comments from teachers at this particular school.

(36,055 posts)when corporate is left to run ANYthing. Because it's not about human investment or excellence, only profit.
You also show how this shit stirring ground game is the horror film script of Republican politics.
The CRT thing you mention is never taught at levels below university -- so if it's illegal to teach, then it would be at that level. This teacher stupidly got it wrong to even talk about at her level, which proves that she doesn't even know the developmental scope and sequence of curricula, which is basic to school of education training. CRT's not even taught in AP classes, because it's part of law school curricula, not African American Studies or any other subject. Even Black scholars haven't heard of it. This was a boogeyman made up crap by Republican racists, a fear bone to toss at whites so afraid of "replacement." CRT's not even a course, it's just some course unit or label for the gradual shallow social attempts at normalizing and 'culturizing' racism as some institution.
These stories are the smokescreen that distract Americans from the reality that corporations are trying to dismantle and own American institutions, education being one of them.
Defund (through DC & statehouse tools)
Deform (through School Reform treadmills of "innovation" that interfere with teaching professionals' own knowledge base and training, and disrupt time-on-task)
Stigmatize (horrid stories of badbadbad teachers)
Privatize ("Choice!" "Charters!" "Homeschooling!" )
Evil can never be institutionalized. Southern (and fearful, and racist) people will keep trying, though. Corporations keep profiting from all that

That's a message you see every time a southern swastika goes by. They are saying if we had our way, you'd be right back in the fields.

(58,785 posts)further education, all right. The constitution isn't a book of rules that dropped from the sky. Most people back then, as now, found the concept, much less the reality, of slavery abhorrent. And it was completely inimical to our founding concept that the basic rights of all men included liberty. That's why we made all forms of slavery of all people illegal.
Btw, although slavery was deeply embedded at the creation of our nation and took more than a half century and civil war to abolish, importation of slaves was made illegal 30 years later, as of January 1, 1808 -- the first date allowed under the constitution that the southern slave colonies had agreed to. The U.S. was among the earliest western nations to do so, and I believe we were the first nation to ban importation of slaves everywhere we had sovereignty.
Indicators.

(20,186 posts)People conveniently forget that slaves were EXPENSIVE and unless you inherited one from a wealthy relative, it's unlikely you owned one unless you were wealthy yourself. Slaves cost the equivalent of $49K in today's dollars. Of course, slaves were not owned by schoolmarms, who were generally not allowed to marry. All the idiots with their Confederate flags and dreams that "the South will rise again" show just how stupid they are.
