Florida fined Leon County $3.57 million Tuesday for violating the disputed vaccine passport law by mandating COVID shots for its employees, the first such penalty issued by the state.
The move by the Florida Department of Health comes a day after the Orlando Sentinel published the list of agencies and businesses being investigated by the state for violating the law, signed earlier this year by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Leon County, home to the state capital of Tallahassee, was the final entry on that list. The health department said the $5,000 per violation fine was issued because the county required 714 employees to be vaccinated and fired 14 for refusing.
It is unacceptable that Leon County violated Florida law, infringed on current and former employees medical privacy, and fired loyal public servants because of their personal health decisions, read a statement attached to the health department notice, first reported by E.W. Scripps.

(2,541 posts)I hope the Feds dont cover this. Even though that is probably the right thing to do. But they should make desantis eat this because ultimately its on him.
What kind of political strategy thinks levying a fine on your own voters who you have already been killing is a winning strategy. If the Federal Government does cover it they should send the $ to Leon County and still make desantis come take it so the county Dems can rake him over a rusty slide for it.
My dislike for the GOP has really taken an upswing in the last couple yrs.
