OH-GOV: Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown endorses Mayor Nan Whaley for governor
Ohio's most prominent Democrat endorsed Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley over Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley for governor.
Im proud to endorse my friend Nan Whaley to be Ohios next governor. Ive seen Nan lead through some of the toughest times a mayor can face," Brown said in a statement Monday. "Through it all, Dayton has come out stronger. Nan will bring that same grit, compassion, and fierce commitment to the governors office, and be a fighter for all of Ohio.
Whaley has a longstanding relationship with Brown, having worked as his statewide get-out-the-vote director. Whaley was an early supporter of Brown's presidential bid considerations. Brown's daughter, Columbus Councilwoman Liz Brown, backed Whaley's 2018 bid for governor.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face off against the winner of the contested GOP race. Gov. Mike DeWine faces challenges from former U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci and farmer Joe Blystone. U.S. Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Troy, has not officially said whether he will run for governor but is actively campaigning for reelection to Congress.
