Who Is Interested in What the DOJ Has in Mind?

Well, I am, of course. So are many other people here on DU. We're eager to learn what progress is being made in investigating the previous administration and the lawless insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. It's frustrating not to know what is happening.

But, who else might be interested in such information? Well, those being investigated. One of the primary reasons for keeping investigations quiet is because of that. Everyone under investigation or who might be under investigation has a strong interest in learning what is happening. Keeping them from knowing helps preserve evidence and prevents evasive actions from being taken.

If you're curious about the daily activities of the DOJ, you can find press releases from that Department posted every day at the web page below. The DOJ is very busy, and it's good to take a look at what it's doing on a regular basis. You'll be surprised at all of the investigations and prosecutions that are going on. Most do not make the news, though. Check it our for yourself:

https://www.justice.gov/news

As citizens, we do have a right to know what the government is up to. However, sometimes it's also important to keep that information from being known by the people being investigated by the DOJ. After all, we want that department to be successful in bringing cases against those who don't have the country's best interests in mind, right?

It's hard to be patient, but sometimes it's necessary. The DOJ is up to many things and is pretty darned effective at bringing people to justice, as you can see in those press releases on the page above.

1. Those Being Investigated Are Not Worried

Bannon is out there spewing his Garbage on a podcast every day, without a care in the world about being held accountable for refusing to show up for his subpoena.

When I hear that he's being taken away to jail, with no platform to rally his supporters each and every day, THEN I'll believe something is being done. Otherwise, it's a different movie, with the same exact ending, where no consequences are suffered by those violating the law.

But he's worried. They all are. That they're still out there making statements does not mean they aren't worried, and they should be worried.

It will soon be Kornacki time. The GQP is gerrymandering its way to taking back the House whereupon its 1st order of business will be to ban any investigations into the 1/6 insurrection. God help us if the GQP wins back the Senate because its 1st order of business will be to eliminate the filibuster. Democrats have a very small window to stop this from happening and I am not a patient person when our democracy hangs by a thread.

5. Well, then, there's something you can be doing.

Wherever you live, you can get involved in getting out the Democratic vote. You can help candidates for office. That will be more effective than worrying about things over which you have no control.

Just worrying is pretty much useless for most of us. Taking some sort of action to counteract what is being attempted, however, is not useless at all. I highly recommend that.

8. Seems It's Always OUR Responsibility To Save Democracy
Tue Oct 19, 2021, 11:24 AM
Oct 2021

Some of us have lives, and choose to support Democratic candidates with donations and by voting in each and every election, no matter how trivial. I myself made it a priority to vote in the CA Recall election, to stop a Moron like Larry Elder from taking over. Even though I knew that he stood little chance of success, I voted, and gave some money to help fight the recall.

Is it wrong for us to want results in return for that support?

Instead of worrying about whether folks on DU will bend over backwards to ensure the saving of a Democracy that's likely already gone, we should be worried about the Independents, or others in the middle, who will see no consequences, and feel that they have no need to vote, since even with the Democrats fully in power, there are no consequences for something so trivial as coming close to overturning an election.

Yes, indeed, it is. We must save it, because it belongs to us.

There is no alternative, now, is there?

9. I did my part in my younger years,
Tue Oct 19, 2021, 11:27 AM
Oct 2021

was very involved in my Democratic party on the ground. If I were to work my butt off in getting out the vote in my district in Pa. I would be totally wasting my time. I will never see a Democratic House member in my district. I live in Pa. and my state, because of gerrymandering, always gets more people to vote Democratic, (that is the GOTV you speak of) and every election year the GQP picks up more seats. The Rep. in my district is Glenn Thompson, he is pathetic, he drinks oil and breathes methane and he will never lose an election in my district. IMO, with the GQP gerrymandering and restricting voting, our #1 priority from the beginning of the Biden administration, should be passing S1. It seems to me that Washington Democrats in the Senate have given up on S1. I have ideas for getting the main parts of S1 passed, but I am not Chuck Schumer. GOTV will still be extremely important in battleground districts and in state-wide elections, but I'm not wasting my time in my district. Until redistricting is done fairly the GQP will continue to get less votes and gain more seats and GOTV can't fix that in every case.

7. Every government agency has a Public Affairs Office that

issues press releases. You can access those at any agency's website. Most never make the news, so such information represents the real news and from the original sources. It's amazing what is revealed on those pages full of press releases.

For myself, I rely on such sources of news far more than I rely on the media, which focuses only on stories that are easy to write about and have a broad audience. There are several such agencies whose Public Affairs pages I visit regularly. It's revealing.

11. So I have a question,
Tue Oct 19, 2021, 11:36 AM
Oct 2021

was the select committee a mistake? I mean I see members of that committee on talk shows every day telling anyone who will listen its strategy. Isn't that giving people behind the coup a heads up? I mean I pretty much know what the plans of the select committee are.

Steve Bannon was a low hanging fruit, wasn't even a part of the Trump administration. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get an indictment against Bannon. His case should be the quickest. I also believe that Bannon would rather do jail time than testify, or if he testifies to claim the 5th. No, IMO, the select committee has a hard row to hoe, norms and rules are not adhered to by the GQP, everything is delayed. IMO, the only way for justice to be served and people held accountable is for the DOJ to do it not the select committee. People can't refuse to appear before a grand jury. IMO, this is all up to Garland.

15. The Select Committee is a LEGISLATIVE Committee.
Tue Oct 19, 2021, 11:46 AM
Oct 2021

It is designed to guide the House in creating legislation to prevent future problems. Aside from being able to forward information to the DOJ, it has NO ENFORCEMENT powers. The House and Senate MAKE LAWS. They do NOT ENFORCE LAWS.

All of that is in the Constitution. The DOJ is the Department that enforces laws. It is part of the Executive Branch of the federal government. Those are very important distinctions and answer your question, if you think about it a little.

The Committee is seeking information as part of the legislative function in the House of Representatives. That is all it can do. If someone refuses to provide information when subpoenaed, the committee can ask the entire House to find that person in contempt of Congress, but it cannot prosecute them. That's up to the DOJ, if there is a referral from the House of Representatives.

It's all about process. The Constitution must be followed.

that things have changed and for their sakes it would be better to cooperate. It is also letting the public know what is coming, so people are engaged on what is happening, as so many think the committee is just for show.

why the DOJ holds its cards close to its chest. We weren't informed, and neither was the subject of that raid. That's how it works.

I don't know why we don't understand that, really.
