Im in greater Cleveland and the price of a McChicken and Cheeseburgers etc went from one dollar to 2 bucks. I know they're paying The employees more but the price increase seems ridiculous

(2,533 posts)That would be my guess as the normal price has been over a buck for many years.

(4,695 posts)There's no way anybody should pay $2 for that flimsy hamburger

(5,557 posts)I suspect fast food will soon fully transition off the $1 value menu concept, and dollar stores will begin moving further away from the $1 pricing model
Inflation is up and will likely stay higher than what we became accustomed to

(58,785 posts)cheap, basic lunch price is now about $5 (daily special $4+ in some local cafes here), $8 is common low end, like Chinese lunch, and $11-12 for the less expensive offerings in a modest chain restaurant that's served at a table but now add a tip too. All lower end.

(5,557 posts)Wendy's Dave's Double combo is $8.69
All American Burger with one side is $9.99 at Texas Roadhouse
I'd much rather have the latter for $1.30 more! Order ahead on the app and picking up from Texas Roadhouse (or another similar place) is as fast as going through the drive-up at a fast food joint

(58,785 posts)Since we're now retired on fixed income and don't take out of our meager retirement investments, we're among the "shocked" and decline to pay even low-end restaurant prices for fast food. We can do better, including your All American.
Fortunately, portions are large enough in lower-end and most chain restaurants that we can share one dish very nicely. Unfortunately for us, there's that often inverse relationship of portion size with price, so that in a couple of restaurants I'd really like to go to more the servings are too elegantly and healthily meager for that.

(14,966 posts)It seems likely that any marketing gambit based around round numbers would probably try to maintain the gimmick for as long as possible even if it incurred losses -- in order to increase traffic -- and then when those losses became truly intolerable just shift the number and enjoy the temporary respite of the higher round number yielding profits also until inflation again renders that price point a loser, rinse and repeat.

(4,695 posts)And the medium fries is over $3 now

(2,343 posts)And I haven't noticed the lines any shorter.
I noticed the same thing at Chuy's a couple weekends ago that prices were up anywhere from $1 to almost $2 an entree. We still waited in line. Good as always.
I think most people don't look at the price of sh... stuff.
People, on the whole, aren't as price sensitve on most things within reason. Thankfully most have the money now and have absorbed this year's inflation. Can it sustain though? We will see over the next year or so.

(25,315 posts)I don't go to McDonald's often enough to know the prices. But the Double Cheese Burger was on the Dollar Menu and it required fries with the order and it was 3 bucks...Forget that.....

(1,159 posts)An extra dollar for a burger so workers get a giving wage? Whats the problem? A snickers is now a $1.25 or more unless its on sale.

(4,695 posts)All I know is I'm not going to pay $2 for a hamburger that weighs an ounce

(1,310 posts)The only things I get from McDonalds are the McDouble and the McChicken - both on the dollar menu. Thats more than enough food for me. Our local McDonalds increased prices substantially a couple of years ago, but I cant complain, especially if it helps their workers. Both of these items would cost more to make at home than to buy at McDonalds, so I come out ahead without the hassle of cooking. Frankly, Im surprised that fast food places can still sell some food items so cheaply.

(54,376 posts)They do have them here, but I havent been in one for twenty plus years. The prices probably vary from country to country. Im sure a Big Mac that might cost the equivalent of $6 in Düsseldorf would cost $8 in Paris and $30 in Switzerland (that country invented sticker shock).

(35,332 posts)but more like a 50% increase. I usually only buy the deals
on their app. Buy one get one or get a Big Mac free with $1 purchase. What irritates me about McDonald's they have no condiments, you have to ask for everything even for salt and pepper or a napkin sometimes. I do go to McDonald's for coffee most mornings but not so much for food. If I want fast food I go to Wendy's. They have good salads, baked potatoes and chilli.

(18,648 posts)Or did only two items go up? If that is the case then is is likely a seasonal promotion ended and they returned to their regular price.

(146,298 posts)So, I doubt that they have doubled prices in general.
I never eat dollar menu items, though, so it wouldn't affect me. Still, I haven't been in a McDonalds for a couple of years now, so I wouldn't know any more.

(118 posts)Several of my friends own restaurants - they would run "wing night" specials, etc and have had to cancel them because wings are so expensive. Another was telling me last week how the prices on even the boxes she buys to put pizza in have almost doubled. The price of frying oil is also way up.
It has nothing to do with wage increases...it is the cost of the food/restaurant supplies.
Torchlight
(3,332 posts)due mainly to product shortages, tech investment, wage increases and higher demand (in that order). US labor Dept. reports that food-away-from-home standards rose 4.7% year-over-year last month. Also, fast-food chains are moving away from economy meals in an attempt to focus more on 'higher dining experience' (industry-talk for more fancy) to bring in more clientele with more disposable income.
Bear in mind, regional differences play a major part as well. It cost 70% more for a Big Mac in Seattle than it costs in Austin, Tex. Most of this discrepancy lies in regional supply and local variances of transport cost.

(25,315 posts)However, the sudden spike in McDonald's Dollar Menu prices is strange....
Torchlight
(3,332 posts)Gradual increases over the past two years sure, but no price spikes at the handful of McDonald's my co-workers and I hit once or twice a month for lunch.

(12,652 posts)This in California, where McD's already had to pay above Federal minimum wage, so it wasn't a big deal to add a dollar or two an hour to people working under 30 hours a week.
Some special offers also got discontinued, which raised prices on those items by about 75 cents, and I have noticed that they're trying out new menu items.
I still can't figure out why an Egg McMuffin is one of the most expensive item on their menu. "Canadian Bacon" - really a thin ham steak - is that much more expensive?
Haele
If you order a egg mcmuffin without canadian bacon like I do, the order taker can change it to a sausage mcmuffin and sub out the sausage for a round egg. then it's a dollar plus tax.
